Jay County golfers score first victory of '06 (08/23/06)

GENEVA - If this kind of improvement continues, watch out.
The Jay County girls golf team posted yet another season-best score Tuesday, earning its first win of the year 193-239 over the South Adams Starfires at Wabash Valley Golf Club. The team score included personal-bests from both Miranda Denney and Jennifer Hunt, and was six strokes better than the previous mark set last week against Anderson Highland.
Junior Trisha Champ led the Patriots (1-2), shooting a consistent round of five pars and four bogeys for match medalist honors with a 4-over-par 40. She had pars on her second, third and fourth holes, and closed with back-to-back pars as well.
The top South Adams score came from Mara Gerber, who shot 50. She finished with three bogeys and a par as she posted her team's best total by 14 strokes.
Denney, a senior, broke 50 for the first time in her career. After a slow start, she posted pars on both the 142-yard, par-3 third hole and the 335-yard, par-4 fourth en route to a 49.
Hunt put up a personal-best score for the second straight match. The sophomore opened with a bogey and joined Champ and Denney in parting No. 4 for a 53.
Fellow sophomore Ivy Simons shot 51, and senior Ashley Bunch matched Hunt's 53.
Other scores for South Adams were Erin Steury with a 58, Amber Melick at 64, Kayla Coblentz with a 67 and Bethany Balsiger at 68.
Junior varsity

Brittany Lewis opened with a par on the 282-yard, par-4 opening hole and closed with another on the 85-yard, par-3 ninth for her personal-best 55. Grace Dobler and Alyssa Neuenschwander shared the best score for South Adams at 68.
Rachel Osterholt, Holly Rittenhouse and Alex Bunch all added personal-best numbers for the Patriots for their own at 56, 61 and 67 respectively. Cindy Muhlenkamp added a 62.
For SAHS, Taylor Miller had a 70, Kara Lehman shot 75 and Tricia Krider score 80.[[In-content Ad]]
