Jay County grads lead Cardinals over IUPIU (01/29/05)
Collegiate check-up
A couple of Jay County graduates helped the Ball State University swim teams to victories over Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Wednesday.
Abby Arnold finished second twice and added a third-place effort as the Cardinal women won 157-59. Caleb Bye had a pair of second-place finishes in the men’s team’s 143-81 victory.
Arnold had her best individual finish in the 50-yard freestyle, trailing only teammate Ashley Vanosdol in 24.94 seconds. She was just seventh tenths off the pace.
She added a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1-minute, 2.84 seconds.
Arnold also teamed with Sarah Welter, Michelle Arakgi and Nicole Rambeau to place second with a time of 1:53.12 as Ball State swept the top three spots in the 200-yard medley relay.
In his second meet with Ball State after transferring from Clemson, Bye finished second to teammate Ryan Plantz in both the one- and three-meter diving events. He scored 264.40 points and 281.05 points respectively.
Sara Heitkamp
The Fort Recovery graduate pushed the Capital University women’s basketball team as it won both of its games this week after dropping three of its previous five.
Heitkamp racked up 20 points in a 77-60 Crusader win over Ohio Northern Jan. 22. She shot 50 percent from the field and hit a couple of 3-pointers in the win.
She also had team highs of seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
NCAA Division III No. 20 Capital (14-3, 8-3 Ohio Athletic Conference) also edged Heidelberg 65-63 Wednesday, with Heitkamp contributing nine points. She made up for a 1-of-7 shooting effort with eight assists, and also added seven rebounds and one steal.
Dustin Overton
The 2004 graduate of Jay County got back onto the court for the Ancilla College men’s basketball team recently in an 86-81 overtime victory over Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
Overton had one field goal and also made his one free-throw attempt to finish with three points.
Both Overton and fellow JCHS graduate Sara Hough were on the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll for the fall semester. The award was given to student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
In addition, Overton was honored for having the highest GPA on the men’s basketball team.
Kyle Weaver
The Jay County graduate contributed to one of only three first-place efforts as the Wabash College swim team lost to 10th-ranked Washington University Jan. 15, 137-102.
Weaver joined Michael Belanger, Chad Damitz and Colin Fahey for first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3-minutes, 18.24 seconds. He added an individual second-place effort in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.42.
Weaver, Damitz, Fahey and Michael Hewitt also won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:38.82 in a 144-97 loss to DePauw University Jan. 19.
Joanie Muhlenkamp
The Jay County graduate was one of just two Taylor University Fort Wayne players to score in double figures as the women’s basketball team took an 87-50 defeat at Indiana Tech Tuesday.
Muhlenkamp finished 4-of-8 from the field and scored 10 points. She also finished with 10 rebounds and one assist.
Amy Meyer
The St. Francis senior and South Adams graduate joined three other Cougar women’s basketball players in double figures in a 79-53 victory over Goshen College Monday.
Meyer shot 5-of-10 from the field, nailing four 3-pointers to finished with 14 points. She was also second on the team with six rebounds.
Steph Welch
A 2002 graduate of South Adams, she finished fifth in both of her events as the Bluffton University women’s track team placed seventh at the Ohio Northern Invitational Jan. 21.
Welch was about four seconds out of third place, finishing fifth in the 500-meter run in 1-minute, 32.77 seconds.
She was one of four athletes to jumpfive one-quarter inch in the high jump, placing third among the group and fifth overall by way of the tiebreaker.
Amanda Habegger
A teammate of Welch’s at Bluffton and also a South Adams graduate, she was ninth in her only race at Ohio Northern.
Habegger finished the 400-meter dash in 1-minute, 6.23 seconds.
Jason Lehman
The South Adams graduate posted a seventh-place finish as the Bluffton men’s track team finished sixth at the Ohio Northern Invitational.
Lehman was seventh in the long jump at 19 feet, 9.5 inches. He also finished 20th in the 55-meter dash in 6.97 seconds.[[In-content Ad]]
