A couple of former Jay County golfers had outstanding showings at the Franklin College Spring Invitational Sunday.

Erin Smith, an Anderson University senior, was the top golfer at the event. Kim Abbott, a junior, posted her best rounds of the spring for the University of Indianapolis.

Smith earned medalist honors at the Franklin College Spring Invitational Sunday as the Ravens placed third at the six-team event. Smith opened with a 78 and shot a second-round 82 for her winning total of 160.

She also helped Anderson to a fifth-place finish at the Tri-State Spring Invitational earlier this month with an 87.

Abbott put together her best effort as U of I won the Franklin tournament. She shot an opening-round 87, and followed it with an 88 for a 175 total.

In other action during the spring season she shot rounds of 108 and 96 for a 204 total at the Indiana Invitational, and came in with a 92 at the Bellarmine Women’s Golf Invite.

Kerri McClung

A graduate of Jay County, she won the shot put for the Bowling Green women’s track team for the third straight meet this week.

McClung dominated the shot put at the EMU Twilight Invitational Monday, winning by more than two feet with a toss of 47 feet, 53/4 inches. She has not lost in the event in nearly a month, having garnered wins at the Miami Invite and the All-Ohio Championships.

Heath Williams

The 2005 Jay County graduate’s hit in the first inning was the biggest of the game as he led the Ancilla College baseball team to victory in game two of a double-header against Muskegon Thursday.

Williams, the Chargers’ leadoff hitter, opened the second game with a double. He came around to score thanks to two wild pitches, giving Ancilla the only run it needed in a 1-0 victory.

Williams also went 3-for-4 in the opening game, which the Chargers dropped 6-4.

Mitch Waters

The Manchester junior and Jay County graduate racked up two more hits to help the Spartans to a 12-3 victory over Mount St. Joseph.

Waters, the third baseman, went 2-for-4 in the contest. He drove in a pair of runs and scored once.

Joscie Kaup

A 2005 graduate of Fort Recovery, she scored one of the Orange’s 26 runs Sunday as the Syracuse softball team clobbered Rutgers 12-4 and 14-1 with both games going just five innings.

Kaup entered the second game of the double-header in the fourth inning as a pinch runner after catcher Katie Kaempfer singled to right field. She advanced to second on a ground out and then scored on a home run by Tanya Rose.

Kaup has appeared in 14 games for the Orange (27-16) this year as a pinch runner, and has scored five runs.[[In-content Ad]]
