Jay County JV tops Scots in 2nd half (10/03/06)

The Scots were anything but kind to Jay County at the end of the second quarter. The host Patriots were happy to return the favor in the second half.

Jay County's junior varsity football team scored 25 unanswered points after the intermission to defeat the Anderson Highland Scots 44-26.

Highland scored twice in the closing moments of the first half to turn a 19-12 deficit into a 26-19 lead. But the Patriots got scores from the special teams and defense to turn the game back in their favor.

Brandon Reynard opened the second-half scoring with a 37-yard punt return for a touchdown, and Sam Lyons notched a 60-yard interception return for a TD in the third quarter. Lyons added two more touchdown runs of 55 and 11 yards in the fourth quarter as Jay County ran away with the win.

Nick Pryor had two 5-yard scoring runs in the first half, and Dustin Harris caught a 65-yard TD pass from John Hawn. Hawn completed one other pass for 79 yards to Ruben Vela, Lyons rushed five times for 88 yards and Alan Brown carried 11 times for 63 yards.

EJ girls place first

GASTON - East Jay Middle School's girls cross country team posted the top finish at Monday's four-team meet at Wes-Del, winning ahead of Delta, West Jay and the host Warriors. Both of East Jay's boys teams finished second, and West Jay's teams all placed third.

Katie Butcher paced the East Jay girls, who swept the top four spots, by finishing first in 12-minutes, 28 seconds. Leah Wellman was second in 12:33, Katie Simmons took third in 12:35 and Deidre Chenoweth was fourth in 13:10. Laura Bowen capped the team score in ninth at 13:31.

Garrett Krieg led the East Jay eighth grade boys in third at 11:51 with Jacob Heitkamp fourth in 11:59. They were trailed by Seth Ainsworth (seventh - 12:47), Joe Imel (11th - 13:29) and Kyle Scott (12th - 14:19).

Bradley Leuthold was fifth for the Chiefs in the sixth and seventh grade boys race in 12:04, and Austin Bentz took sixth in 12:09. Joining them were Blake LeMaster (eighth - 12:29), Alex Dunn (10th - 12:49) and Colby Cline 911th - 12:57).

Chance Fuller and Liz Lennartz turned in the top times for West Jay. Fuller was ninth in the boys race in 12:35 while Lennartz took 10th in the girls competition with a time of 13:23.

Following Fuller for the Eagle boys were Zac Johnson (16th - 12:35), Dylan Friddle (20th - 16:24) and Lee Mock (21st - 17:16). Behind Lennartz were Meagan J. Price (12th - 13:46), Carly Weaver (15th - 14:08), Macy Gerber (18th - 14:25) and Megan E. Price (19th - 14:28).

Capper racks up four TDs

Gage Capper racked up four touchdowns for his Broncos during the fourth week of play in the Jay Community Center/FCC Fall Flag Football League Saturday.

Capper caught touchdown passes from Thomas Hawn in the first and second quarters of his team's 49-7 win over the Jets in the second and third grade division. He added a TD run in the second quarter and returned an interception for a touchdown in the third.

Scoring two touchdowns apiece during week four were Ryan Schlechty and Cade Wendel in the preschool through first grade division and Mitchell Bruggeman and Dakota Grove in the second and third grade division.

Broering scores five

Aaron Broering scored all of his team's five goals in the Jay Community Center's Fall Soccer League this week.

Broering nearly pulled his squad back from a 4-0, third-quarter deficit, but his First Bank of Berne team lost 6-5 to Pak-a-Sak. Broering scored twice in the third quarter to pull FBB within 5-2 and added three more goals in the fourth as the comeback fell just short.

Ravi Patel had half of Pak-a-Sak' six goals in its victory in the sixth through eighth grade division. Also posting three goals Saturday were Hannah Phillips in the preschool and kindergarten division and Kazuki Kawamura in the fourth and fifth grade division.[[In-content Ad]]
