Jay County records season-high score (02/02/04)

Jay County Roundup

The Patriots have bounced back.

After scoring their second-lowest mark of the season against Connersville in its last meet, the Jay County gymnastics team rebounded in a big way at the New Castle three-way meet Saturday. It posted its best score of the season — 99.15 — and finished just behind the 11th-ranked New Castle Trojans.

New Castle won the meet with 101.75, and Blackford was third with 83.05.

The Patriots had an awesome day on the uneven parallel bars, sweeping the top three positions.

Sophomore Hannah Williams won the event with an 8.4, part of her outstanding individual effort which gave her the all-around title with a 35.0. Freshman Lacey Thornburg was just behind Williams with an 8.3 for second place, and senior Amanda Knight followed closely with an 8.3 to take third.

Williams’ day was bolstered by an awesome floor exercise score of 9.5. Along with those two event victories, Williams was third on the vault with an 8.85, and third on the balance beam with an 8.25.

Junior Lacey Grider picked up the other top-four finish for Jay County on the day as she placed fourth on the vault with an 8.45.

Jay County stayed unbeaten in junior varsity action with a 78.4. New Castle scored 58 points, and Blackford did not field and JV squad.

The Patriots rolled to the win by sweeping the top three spots in three events, and taking first and second in the vault. They had a different gymnast take first in each event.

Melissa Fifer had the top JV score with a 7.95 to win the vault. Kayla Smith took first in the floor with a 6.95, Caitlin Dun was first on the bars with a 6.3 and Heather Stevens took the beam win with a 5.9.

Jay County will compete at the Marion Invitational Saturday at noon.

Patriots split

Jay County’s girls basketball team survived a scare in the first round, but fell in the championship game of the Muncie Burris Tournament Saturday.

The Patriots opened with a 54-44 comeback win over the host Owls, but lost to Indianapolis Manual in the finals 49-42.

Jay County (9-7) gave up 22 second-quarter points in the opening contest, falling behind 32-24 at halftime. It cut the lead to six points after three periods, before rallying in the fourth quarter.

Burris (9-8) managed just one point in the final period as the Patriots outscored them 17-1 for the 10-point victory.

Felisha Parr led the Patriots in the contest with 17 points. Lindsay Friddle followed with 11, and Sarah Dirksen added six.

Indianapolis Manual (10-8) took a 15-12 lead in the first quarter, but Jay County bounced back for a 27-22 advantage at the half. However, the offense disappeared for the Patriots as they managed just 15 second-half points.

Parr again led Jay County in the defeated with 17 points. Jamie Bruggeman finished with nine points.

Roush rolls well

Summer Roush barely qualified, but caught fire once she got into the match-play portion of the Hoosier Conference girls singles bowling tournament Saturday. She scored a pair of tournament upsets to finish fourth in the conference girls singles competition.

Roush, the lone girls representative from the Jay County High Rollers, snuck into the 16-person field as the No. 15 seed with scores of 172, 168 and 158 in three qualifying games.

From there she went wild with her best score of the day, knocking off second-seeded Jennifer Tacket of Huntington North by a slim 191-189 margin. She eliminated No. 7 Tiffany Smith of Huntington North 177-173 in the second round to reach the final four.

But, finally a Huntington bowler was able to beat her as Lindsey Bruemleve eliminated Roush by a 212-135 final.

Bruemleve went on to win the sectional championship over Tiffany Lee of Marion. Huntington North’s Ashley Bowling was third and Roush placed fourth.

The boys varsity team will roll Wednesday at Villa Lanes in Decatur.

Pats take tourney

Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team had an outstanding day Saturday, rolling to a couple of wins to earn the Blackford Invitational title.

The Patriots topped Frankton 39-26 in the first round, and clobbered Bluffton 46-29 in the finals.

Ryan Rogers paced the Patriots with 17 points in the first game, and Kaleb Carpenter was the high scorer in the second game with 12 points. Jon Wenger was among the top scorers in both games with 12 points against Frankton and 10 points against Bluffton.
