Jay County smacks Scots (09/19/06)

Local roundup

ANDERSON - A little mud didn't stop the Patriots' offense.

Jay County's girls soccer team scored at will on the sloppy field at Anderson Highland Monday, defeating the host Scots 7-2. It is now 2-0 in the Olympic Athletic Conference, 5-3-1 overall, and can clinch the OAC title when it hosts Muncie Southside Saturday.

Sara Garringer scored three of the Patriots' five goals in the opening half for her second hat trick of the season. The senior also had two assists, giving her four in the last two games and extending her Jay County school record to 15 for her career.

Junior Dana Horn scored off a Garringer assist in the first half, and freshman Pazia Speed also posted a goal as Jay County rolled to its 5-0 halftime lead. Speed scored again on Garringer's second assist just 2:30 into the second half, and Abby Loy came away from her goalie position to score the final Patriot goal in the 7-0 win.

The entire Jay County roster saw the field in the blowout, and 10 different players took shots on goal. The Patriots had 20 shots on goal for the game, compared to nine for Highland.

"Everyone contributed to the shutout and hopefully what will be the conference title," said JCHS coach Sue Rager. "We were hungry for the win. The bench was a real asset to us tonight. They played with intensity. It was a true team effort."

Jay JV wins struggle

SHENANDOAH - Both teams were held scoreless in the second half Monday as Jay County's junior varsity football team defeated the Shenandoah Raiders 14-6.

Shenandoah had a chance to tie the score in the fourth quarter of the game in which the teams neared double digits in turnovers. A Raider receiver had the ball in his hands for what could have been a touchdown reception, but Colton Lombardo hit him before his feet reached the ground the ball popped out.

The Patriots opened the scoring on a 16-yard run by Alan Brown, who finished with 50 yards rushing, in the first quarter. Shenandoah scored in the second period, but missed the extra point and trailed 7-6.

John Hawn capped the scoring on a 1-yard quarterback sneak later in the second quarter, and Cody Scott added his second extra point for the final margin.

Nick Pryor led the defense with an interception and a fumble recovery.

EJ spikers drop three

East Jay Middle School's volleyball teams all fell to the Delta Eagles Monday.

The sixth graders pushed Delta to three games, but lost 25-6, 20-25, 15-9. In the eighth grade match East Jay lost 25-22, 25-20 to the Eagles and the seventh grade Chiefs lost 25-15, 25-16.

Emily DeVoe racked up 16 points for the East Jay sixth graders. Lexie Gierhart had three digs.

The eighth grade squad was led by Sierra Weatherhead with seven digs and six points.

Shelby Ruiz followed with five points, including three aces.

Mariah Horniday notched five points and four kills for seventh grade team. Kassie Hemmelgarn added four points.

Carvel, Grove go wild

Kyler Carvel and Dakota Grove combined for as much offense in the first quarter as many teams could come up with in several weeks, stealing the show in week two of the Jay Community Center/FCC Fall Flag Football League Saturday.

Carvel and Grove went head-to-head, leading their Broncos and Chiefs respectively in the second and third grade division. They each scored four touchdowns in the opening period, but it was Carvel's Broncos who kept up the pace in a 72-49 win.

Though Grove gave his team a 35-28 lead with his fifth touchdown early in the second quarter, Carvel quickly tied it with his first touchdown pass after three rushing scores and one receiving in the opening quarter. He tossed two more touchdown passes and ran in for two more scores, giving him a hand in all nine Bronco TDs.

Cole Stigleman and Mitchel Bruggeman matched Grove with five touchdowns for the second straight week.

Braun and Huey score 3

Mackenzie Huey did all of the scoring for her team in a 3-1 victory in the Jay Community Center Fall Soccer League Saturday.

Huey gave Bollenbacher & Associates a 1-0 lead in the first quarter in the first through third grade girls division, but Adams Physical Therapy tied the game in the second. Huey took care of the rest, scoring one goal apiece in the third and fourth quarters.

Scoring two goals were David Kohler, Brinnin Wasson and Nathaniel Lykins in the preschool through kindergarten division, Mariah Bailey, Kyra Braun and Zaaron Lee in the first through third grade division, Miguel Ruiz in the fourth through fifth grade division and Aaron Broering in the sixth through eighth grade division.[[In-content Ad]]
