PORTLAND — If the regular season has been any indication, defense will be the key to the Patriots winning a third straight sectional title. And if that’s the case, they hope to be able to repeat Wednesday’s effort.

The Jay County girls basketball team held the Delta Eagles without a field goal for the first nine minutes on the way to a 51-37 victory.

“I thought we came out with a lot of intensity,” said coach Kirk Comer, whose team is now has the best record (15-5) of any JCHS squad since 1992-93. “I think we just took them out of a lot of things they wanted to do.

“I thought our defense was very good in the first half.”

Defense has been the calling card for Jay County this year as it holds the best defensive average among sectional teams at 37.6 points per game. It has allowed more than 50 points just three times, with those games accounting for three of the five losses.

One of those came in a 52-31 thrashing at Elwood earlier this season, but senior Jamie Bruggeman said turning that result around in a possible sectional championship rematch is all in the Patriots’ mind set.

“I think it’s 100 percent mental,” she said. “Everything else is there, we just have to have it in our heads.”

Jay County tortured the Eagles in the early going Wednesday, forcing six first-quarter turnovers. When Delta did get shots off it didn’t matter as it went 0-of-7 from the field in the opening quarter.

The Patriots never trailed, taking a 4-0 lead and pushing the advantage to 11-3 after the first period. Seven of those points came from Bruggeman, one of five senior players making their final appearance at home.

Kelly Costello finally ended Delta’s shooting drought with a 3-pointer at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter, and eventually cut the deficit to 18-11. But Jay County finished the first half on an 8-0 run after Costello went to the bench with three fouls.

“When you start making a run and you’ve got to take your best player out of the game (that hurts),” said Delta coach Glen Stewart of Costello, who paced the Eagles with 14 points. “I don’t know if we hit the rim in the first quarter. Our shot selection wasn’t real good, but our good shots weren’t even close.”

Costello shot 6-of-10 for Delta and hit a couple of 3-pointers, but the rest of the team was just 5-of-28 (18 percent).

“I think we’re a really good defensive team,” said Bruggeman “We’ve been working on that all week really hard. Coach has been pushing us and I think we did exceptionally well.”

Bruggeman scored 13 of her game-high 17 points to lead Jay County in the first half. She also shared the team high with five rebounds.

Delta (7-14) never got close in the second half after Jay County opened on a 9-2 run to push the lead to 35-13. The Eagles scored more than half of their points in the fourth quarter.

Senior Renae Laux joined Bruggeman in double figures with 11 points. Senior Leah Gasparovic had six points, and senior Lisa Weitzel added three.

Markie Runyon and Theresa Reinhart added six points apiece.

Gasparovic also had five rebounds, and Sara Garringer dished out four assists.

Jay County introduced six starters for the final home game, including injured senior Sarah Dirksen, who played in just two games this year before suffering a season-ending knee injury in practice.

“I only had the privilege to coach them for one year, and I told them in the locker room before the game it’s just been an honor for me to get to know them for a season,” said Comer of the seniors. “Hopefully we can keep this going for a while, but when this finally is over these are going to be five girls I’m really going to miss.”

After a slow start by both teams Jay County slaughtered Delta in the JV contest, 67-32.

The Patriots trailed 3-2 in the first period, but took the lead for good on a Nicole Pfeifer 3-pointer from the right wing. That shot started an 18-1 run, spanning four minutes and ending on a steal and lay-up by Cassandra Huelskamp.

Jay County, which finished its season at 15-2, scored 23 points apiece in the second and third quarters as it built a 40-point lead.

Brittany O’Dell paced the Patriots with 14 points, and Dana Horn joined her in double figures with 12.

Abby Loy scored eight points, Shelby Rines had seven and Pfeifer chipped in six.

Demi Selvey had 11 points for Delta, and Alissa Calhoun scored nine.[[In-content Ad]]
