Jay County takes OAC title in 10 innings (05/07/07)

JCHS baseball

CONNERSVILLE - It took the Patriots 10 innings to win the Olympic Athletic Conference title. And that was for two games, not just one.

Jay County dominated the OAC baseball tournament Saturday, crushing Muncie Southside 10-0 in the first round and Anderson Highland 13-3 in the championship. Highland reached the finals by defeating the host Spartans in their opening game.

The pair of victories continued the Patriots' run as an offensive juggernaut. They are 12-2 on the year and have scored double-digit runs in 10 of their victories, eight of which have ended early by the mercy rule.

Josh Ludy powered the Patriots, who have outscored their opponents 72-11 in their current six-game winning streak, in the championship blowout with four hits in four at bats. He had two doubles and a triple while scoring three times and driving in a pair of runs.

Josh Selvey and Thomas McCowan each had three hits and three runs. Andy Hughes finished with two hits, two runs and three RBIs, and Casey Waters had two hits and four RBIs.

The 13 runs of support backed Hughes on the mound as he improved to 4-0 on the year. He allowed three runs - two earned - on four hits and five walks while striking out nine.

The McCowan cousins topped a fairly balanced effort in the shutout of Southside. Thomas went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Tony totaled one hit, two runs and one RBI.

Ludy and Rhett Retter added two runs apiece, Michael Jobe drove in two runs and Waters had a pair of hits.

Jobe struck out eight batters in a one-hit shutout to improve to 5-1 and lower his ERA to 1.31, second only to Hughes' 0.88.[[In-content Ad]]
