Jay County tankers open season at 2-0 (06/07/06)

BLUFFTON — It was close again, but the Jay County Summer Swim team eked out a win.
Jay County improved to 2-0 Tuesday, using its depth for a 553-529 win over Wells Community.
For the second straight meet the team swept the 8-and-younger girls events. Anne Vormohr picked up victories in the long freestyle, breaststroke and short freestyle, and Sophie Bader won the butterfly and backstroke.
Mary Hudson was the only other swimmer to win three events. She took first place in the 11-12-year-old girls butterfly, individual medley and short freestyle.
Adding two wins apiece were Sok Vormohr, Katy Smeltzer, Rhianon Mills, Eme Miller, Richard Osterholt, Aaron Hudson and Cori Vormohr.
Rockets blast GC
MARION — The Portland Rockets dominated their opening game in the Midwest Prospects League Tuesday, clobbering the Grant County Wildcats 17-0.
Derek Lehrman paced the powerful Portland offense with four hits. Brandon Cooley had three hits on his birthday, Nick Millspaugh added three hits and Jay County graduate Heath Williams added two.
Eric Van Matre and Matt Ousley combined for the shutout. Van Matre gave up just two hits while striking out nine in five innings.
All-OAC teams announced
The Olympic Athletic Conference announced its all-conference teams Tuesday with three Jay County athletes earning first-team honors in baseball and softball.
Senior pitcher Josh Shatto led the list of baseball selections for the Patriots, who finished 16-11 and were the OAC runners-up. He was joined by sophomores Michael Jobe, a pitcher and designated hitter, and Josh Ludy, the team’s catcher.
Amber Champ, a senior second baseman, picked up the first-team award in softball. Jay County finished 13-13.
She was joined by junior pitcher Shae Keller and sophomore catcher Trisha Champ.
John Retter, Josh Selvey and Tony McCowan were honorable mention selections in baseball. No. 2 singles player Carissa Wilkins and the No. 2 doubles team of Tiffani Bickel and Cindy Muhlenkamp earned honorable mention in girls tennis.
Knapke aces No. 8
Jason Knapke picked up the second hole-in-one Sunday.
Knapke used a pitching wedge as he aced the 138-year, par-3 eighth hole at Portland Golf Club. The shot was witness by Tim Knapke, Brad Burkett and Bob Quadrozzi.[[In-content Ad]]
