Jay County teams draw rematches (10/03/03)

Local Roundup

The Jay County soccer teams didn’t get the ideal path to the sectional title. At least they’ll each get a chance at revenge.

Both Patriot teams drew first-round sectional match-ups against opponents they have lost against the season. The sectional pairings were released Thursday.

Jay County’s boys team will open sectional play first, taking on the Huntington North Vikings at the Blackford Sectional Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m.

The Patriots (9-3) lost to Huntington North 3-2 this season. The Vikings also thwarted their chances at an Olympic Athletic Conference title last year with a shoot-out win.

Wednesday’s other first-round game will pit Norwell against South Adams — two teams Jay County has defeated this year — at 7:30 p.m. The winners will meet in the semifinals Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.

The other half of the bracket shows Bellmont vs. Blackford Monday, Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m. and Heritage vs. Marion at 7:30 p.m. The winners of those games will meet in semifinal action Saturday at 11 a.m.

The championship match will also be Saturday, starting at 7 p.m.

The Jay County girls team drew a bye through the first round, and will meet the host Starfires in semifinal action at South Adams Saturday, Oct. 18 at 9:30 a.m.

South Adams defeated the Patriots 1-0 this season. That decision has since been reversed because the Starfires played the game with an ineligible player.

First-round girls matches will be played Tuesday Oct. 14 and Thursday Oct. 16 at 4:30 p.m. with Blackford taking on favorite Bellmont and Huntington North playing Norwell. Those winners will play Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The championship match will be Saturday at 4 p.m.

Starfires stomp Bluffton

South Adams won its second match in a row Thursday, rolling over the Bluffton Tigers in three games 21-17, 21-9, 21-18. The win lifted the volleyball team to 8-14 overall and 2-4 in the Allen County Athletic Conference.

Seniors LeeAnn Snyder and Kelly Mertz controlled the match for the Starfires.

Snyder led the way with two blocks and two aces. She was second on the team behind Mertz in kills (six) and digs (11).

Mertz paced South Adams with eight kills and 19 digs. Alyssa Miller added 24 assists.

The Starfire junior varsity team picked up a 24-22, 17-21, 21-10 victory over the Tigers. The freshman team defeated Bluffton 21-14, 21-13.

South Adams will play in the Richmond Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.

Jay girls fall

The four-game winning streak ended for the Jay County girls soccer team Thursday with a 2-0 loss to the Muncie Central Bearcats.

The teams played to a stand-still in the first half, with Muncie Central missing on all of its seven shots on goal while the Patriots took just two. But Jay County (8-4-1) went without a shot after the intermission while the Bearcats came with a barrage.

Muncie Central shot 13 times after the break, scoring both their goals within a two-minute span. Michelle Morgan scored with 34:25 to go in the second half, and Amanda Ford put in the second goal for the 2-0 final margin.

Jamie Bruggeman and Lindsay Friddle had the lone shots on goal for Jay County in the defeat.

The Patriots will play their final match of the regular season next week when they host Yorktown for Senior Night Tuesday at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
