Jay County tennis falls to Tigers

After winning its first three matches of the season, the Jay County girls tennis team suffered its second straight loss Thursday by a 4-1 score to the visiting Bluffton Tigers.
Danielle Chenoweth and Chelsea Kimmel picked up the only Patriots' win, topping Carsan Cunningham and Katie Murray 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
JCHS played closes first sets at both No. 1 spots, but couldn't quite force a tiebreaker in either. In the singles match Kayla Martin lost 7-5, 6-2 to Kara Fiechter, and in doubles Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman fell 7-5, 6-0 to Annessa Reif and Samantha Drew.
At No. 2 singles Mariah Clark suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Amy Baker, and at No. 3 singles Alyssa Rigby lost 6-3, 6-2 to Megan Evans.
In junior varsity action Jay County scored four shutout wins - from singles players Jessica Ooten and Cindy Hein and the doubles teams of Kyla McKibben and Melinda Penrod, and McKenzie McIntire and Miranda Reinhart - in a 10-1 victory.
SA softball stumbles in 7th
BERNE - The final inning proved a killer for the South Adams softball team Thursday as it gave up four runs in a 10-8 loss to the New Haven Bulldogs.
In a back-and-forth affair that saw runs in almost every half-inning, South Adams took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fith and another in the bottom of the sixth. But New Haven bounced back in its final at bat to drop the Starfires to 1-2 on the year.
Katrina Hawkins took the loss, although only four of the 10 runs against her were unearned. She gave up eight hits and five walks while striking out nine.
Jennifer Miller finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run, and Karen Bollenbacher had two hits and two runs. Brianna Nevil and Rosa Hilty each added two hits, and Brittany Pugsley scored twice.

SELMA - Jay County's baseball team won its first two games of the season, but couldn't make it three in a row as it ran into state-ranked Wapahani Thursday. The Patriots managed just three hits in an 8-0 loss to the Class 2A No. 6 Raiders.
Skyler Petty suffered the loss, giving up seven runs - six earned - in three innings. Nathaniel Brown, Willie Mayfield and Chance Fuller each had one hit for JCHS (2-1).
