Jay County tennis runs record to 3-0

RICHMOND - The Patriots will carry a 3-0 record into their battle with the defending sectional champions.
Jay County High School's girls tennis team stayed undefeated Monday, knocking off the Richmond Red Devils 3-2. It plays tonight at Marion, which has won eight straight sectional titles.
The victory over Richmond came on the power of a doubles sweep, with both teams taking 6-4 first-set victories.
At the No. 1 spot Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second set against Rikki Pegg and Ciera DeCaurscy and won the next four games to finish off a 6-4, 6-1 win. The No. 2 duo of Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth took the first three games of the second set, saw their lead slip to 4-3 versus Maddie Farris and Brianne Bockover and then won consecutive games for a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Alyssa Rigby earned the other win for Jay County at No. 3 singles, where she cruised past Miranda Bertsch 6-1, 6-1.
Rigby and the team of Muhlenkamp and Huntsman are both 3-0 on the year.
Kayla Martin fell 6-1, 6-4 to Catherine Ahaus at No. 2 singles, and Mariah Clark suffered a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to Olivia Engle at No. 1 singles.
Junior varsity
The Patriots suffered their first loss of the season, dropping a 6-4 decision to Richmond in a match that included five tiebreakers.
Brittany White picked up the only singles win for Jay County, defeating Katy Robinson 5-4 (8-6), 4-2 at the No. 1 spot. Chelsea Kimmel and Jessica Ooten also came up with a tiebreaker victory at No. 1 doubles to beat Lizzie Shepherd and Mary Ripberger 4-2, 2-4 (10-8).
At No. 2 doubles Alicia Degler and Dezi Clay beat Julia Hays and Becca Jones 4-2, 4-2, and in the No. 4 doubles match Jeanette Thomas and Lissa Simms blanked Yasmeen Lewis and Sarah Vrazalich 4-0, 4-0.[[In-content Ad]]
