Jay County wins conference relays

BLUFFTON - The Jay County Summer Swim Team fought off South Adams Saturday to win the Wabash Valley Conference Relays.

Jay County scored 1,738 points, finishing 48 ahead of South Adams. Host Wells Community (1,560) was third, and North Adams Central (692) placed fourth.

The group of Neal Fennig, Aaron Hudson, Sam Miller, Wiley Young, Richard Osterholt and Alex Sutton combined to sweep the 15-and-older boys events as Jay County took the top spot in 18 out of 50 races. Fennig, Hudson, Miller and Young took the medley, butterfly, backstroke and freestyle relays. Osterholt and Sutton joined Hudson and Miller to win the breaststroke relay.

Sophie Bader, Ashley Mark, Katy Smeltzer and Anne Vormohr teamed to win the medley, butterfly, backstroke and freestyle relays in the 11-12-year-old girls division. Mary Hudson, Aly Miller, Eme Miller, Cori Vormohr, Maddie Fennig, Elaine Hemmelgarn and Katie Simmons combined to win four events in the 15-and-older girls division.

Four reach state

Alex Bader, Anne Vormohr, Sophie Bader and Sydney Mathias all posted state-cut times this weekend at the Fort Wayne Aquatics Summer Splash.

Alex Bader had the top finish, placing third in the 9-10-year-old girls 100-meter breaststroke in 1-minute, 44 seconds. She also qualified for the long course state meet, which will be contested in Indianapolis in July, with a sixth-place finish in the 50 butterfly.

Anne Vormohr was fourth in the 11-12-year-old girls 50 backstroke to earn a state berth, and Sophie Bader qualified in the 11-12-year-old girls 50 butterfly with a fifth-place finish. Mathias earned her first career state berth by finishing ninth in the 9-10-year-old girls 100 breaststroke.[[In-content Ad]]
