Jay County has three weeks to get its pass defense ready. It will get a workout in sectional play.
The Indiana High School Athletic Association held the drawing for the 2005 football state tournament Sunday with the Patriots lining up against the Pendleton Height Arabians in the first round.
Pendleton Heights is 3-4 on the season, but has a penchant for throwing the football. The Arabians completed 35-of-55 passes two weeks ago in handing Delta its only loss of the season, 28-21 in overtime.
Jay County (5-2) will open its tournament this year playing at Pendleton Heights Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. The other first-round games in Class 4A’s sectional 12 will be Delta (6-1) at Connersville (1-6), Muncie Southside (0-7) at New Castle (3-4) and Greenfield-Central (0-7) at No. 9 Muncie Central (6-1).
The Jay County/Pendleton Heights and Delta/Connersville winners will meet in semifinal action Oct. 28. The other semifinal game will pit the Southside/New Castle winner against the Central/Greenfield-Central victor.
The championship game will be played Nov. 4.
Against sectional opponents this year Jay County lost to Delta 32-6 in the season opener, defeated Southside 34-8 and defeated Connersville 14-13. The Patriots dropped out of last season’s tournament with a 32-6, first-round loss to eventual champion Muncie Central.
South Adams (2-5) will open sectional play as it hosts Winchester (4-3) Oct. 21. Other first round games in Class 2A’s sectional 28 are Centerville (4-3) at Oak Hill (4-3), eighth-ranked Eastbrook (6-1) at Bluffton (1-6) and Madison-Grant (5-2) at Alexandria (1-6).
Semifinal games will have the Winchester/South Adams winner against the Centerville/Oak Hill winner and the Eastbrook/Bluffton winner versus the Madison-Grant/Alexandria winner. The championship game will be Nov. 4.
South Adams has split its games against sectional opponents this year with a 31-21 loss to Eastbrook and a 35-14 win over Bluffton. The Starfires lost in the first round of the 2004 tournament 34-8 to eventual state runner-up Eastbrook.[[In-content Ad]]
