Jay, Fort give winter awards (03/21/07)

Jay County and Fort Recovery high schools held their awards ceremonies Wednesday for the winter sports season.

All-Olympic Athletic Conference honorees were announced for boys and girls basketball at JCHS, with seniors Corey Comer and Nicole Pfeifer each earning first-team honors while their classmates Scott "Scooter" Bruggeman and Sara Garringer picked up honorable mention.

Comer finished as the JCHS boys basketball team's top scorer and rebounder at 13.2 points and 5.5 boards per game. He shot 58.7 percent for the year and had 33 assists, 29 steals and eight blocks as the team had its best regular season ever at 16-4.

Pfeifer averaged 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds for the girls team to go along with 20 steals and 16 assists this season.

Bruggeman joined Comer in scoring in double figures for the Patriot boys at 10.5 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds. The school's career record holder in boys assists and steals added 102 assists, 46 steals and 20 blocks.

Garringer was the leading scorer for the JCHS girls at 10.9 points per game. She added 2.5 rebounds per contest, 22 assists and 11 steals despite missing seven games because of injury.

Conference honorees in other sports were determined by their performance in their respective OAC Tournaments. They were: Cori Vormohr and April Acker in girls swimming, Sam Miller and Steven Kelly in boys swimming and Nadlie Runyon in gymnastics.

Indians honored

Fort Recovery High School also held its winter sports awards ceremony Wednesday with 11 athletes picking up conference academic honors.

The girls basketball team led the way when nine players were named to the All-Midwest Athletic Conference Academic team. Winners were seniors Sara Fortkamp, Abby Niekamp, Vicki Roessner, Holly Stein and Lauren Wenning and sophomore Anne Koesters, Joanna Snyder, Kinsey Wenning and Kelsey Wuebker.

Also picking up the honor for the FRHS boys basketball team were seniors Tony Diller and Aaron Kahlig.

In order to win the award a player must be a sophomore, junior or senior who earned a varsity letter and holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher.

Stein and Clint Tobe were also honored Wednesday as MVPs for their respective teams while Niekamp and Matt Tobe took home the Indian Award.[[In-content Ad]]
