Jay, Fort split state-line double-header (05/17/04)
JCHS/FRHS Baseball
PORTLAND — Saturday’s state-line double-header couldn’t have had two games with much greater contrast in style.
The first was loaded with errors, and saw a pitcher earn the victory in the final start of his career. The seconds swayed on just one big error, with a sophomore pitcher picking up the win in his first varsity start.
The Fort Recovery baseball team scored five unearned runs for Nick Wehrkamp in a 10-5 win over Jay County in the opener, and the Patriots posted four unearned runs in the second inning en route to a 7-2 win for Josh Atkinson in game two.
In his last trip to the mound for the Indians, Wehrkamp allowed Jay County (11-8) only one big inning. It got four runs — two earned — on him in the fourth inning to grab a brief 5-4 lead, but didn’t get to him for much more.
Wehrkamp, who earned All-Midwest Athletic Conference honors last week, saw a runner reach base against him in every inning. But ,it didn’t phase him as he scattered nine hits.
He gave up five runs — three earned — while finishing with one strikeout and nw walks.
“Nick pitched a great game in his last start as a senior,” said Fort Recovery coach Aaron Vaughn. “He’s been a great kid for us.”
While Wehrkamp is finished on the mound, the Patriots hope to see plenty more over the next two season of what they got from Josh Atkinson in the second game. The sophomore baffled the Indian hitters, allowing just three hits in the complete-game win.
Atkinson silenced the top of the Fort Recovery order. The first four hitters in the lineup had seven hits, seven RBIs and five runs in the opener, but went 0-for-12 with three strikeouts in game two and hit just one ball out of the infield.
The only two runs Atkinson allowed were unearned as he struck out four and did not issue a walk in seven innings.
“It was a real good way to start,” said Atkinson. “It feels great.
“I started off just throwing fastballs by them and hitting my spots really well. My curveball didn’t really start working until the end of the game.”
His effort helped to turn the tide after the Indians (8-16) essentially controlled a game-one which was littered with errors.
The Tribe had leads of 3-0 and 4-1 in the first game before the big fourth inning for Jay County. But, the home team’s lead was short-lived.
Fort Recovery jumped back ahead as Steve Trobridge earned a one-out walk in the top of the fifth inning. After a strikeout by Chris Galdeen, C.J. Tobe reached first on an error by Trent Bailey.
A walk by Todd Post, a pair of Mike Smith wild pitches and a throwing error on catcher Mike Alberson brought Trobridge and Tobe around to put the Tribe ahead for good.
It added four more runs in the seven inning as each of the first five Indian hitters reached base. Trobridge singled, Smith hit Galdeen with a pitch and C.J. Tobe got on when right fielder Cory Locke dropped his fly ball.
Then Post and Greg Faller delivered a pair of debilitating hits to right-center field, Post with an two-run single and Faller with an two-run double.
Half of the 10 Indian runs were unearned as Smith took the loss, giving up six runs — three earned — in three innings of relief of starter Josh Shatto.
Dusty Guggenbiller went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Indians, and Post was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Tobe had a hit, an RBI and three runs, and Faller had a hit, two RBIs and a run.
“The first game I thought we came out and hit the ball really well,” said Vaughn. “We had a couple bonehead plays in the middle of the game, but we didn’t let that get to us.”
Trent Bailey was 3-for-4 in the opener, and Adam Brandt had a pair of doubles, one run and one RBI for the Patriots. John Retter singled, drove in a run and scored once, and Mike Alberson notched a pair of RBIs.
Still, Jay County coach Lea Selvey said he thought his team may have come in a little complacent after a pair of wins over state-ranked teams — Class 3A No.1 Blackford and Class 2A No. 4 Northeastern — earlier in the week.
“The bottom line is we were not ready to play,” said Selvey. “But, I’m not taking anything away from Fort Recovery because they hit the ball. They beat our butts.”
The Patriots broke even on the day by making Fort Recovery pay for an error to open the second inning of game two.
Right fielder Tony Diller dropped John Retter’s fly ball, and although the Indians got Retter out on Adam Brandt’s fielder’s choice the error would come back to haunt them. Alberson followed with a fly out to center, which should have marked the last out of the inning, but thanks to the error Eric Somers came to the plate and was hit by a Guggenbiller pitch.
Senior Nathan Miller delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single, and then Heath Williams cleared the bases. He hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season to give Jay County a 4-0 lead it would never relinquish.
“We had four runs in the second inning and we should’ve been out of the inning,” said Vaughn. “It was just one big error really. We didn’t play too bad of defense after that.”
Williams — who was 0-for-4 in the first game — doubled to lead off a three-run fifth inning in which Brandt delivered his third double of the day to drive in a pair of runs. The Indians scored their only two runs in the sixth.
Williams finished 2-for-2 in the second game with two runs and two RBIs. Smith was 2-for-3 with a run, and Brandt and Miller each had a hit, two RBIs and one run.
“The other kids have really picked up the hitting,” said Selvey. “Still, when Williams is on he’s just totally disruptive.”
Trobridge doubled and scored for the Indians, and Diller had the only other run. Wehrkamp and Dusty Tobe each had a hit, and Galdeen notched the only RBI.
Both teams return to action today, with Jay County hosting Fort Wayne South Side at 4:30 p.m. and Fort Recovery heading to Parkway for the season finale at 4:30 p.m.
