RICHMOND — Jay County’s freshman girls basketball team pulled back to .500 Wednesday with a victory over the host Richmond Red Devils.

The Patriots (3-3) took control by outscoring Richmond 10-2 in the opening quarter. They allowed just two points again in the second period as they pushed their advantage to double digits on the way to the win.

Kristi Morningstar powered the effort with eight points, and Ashley Waters scored six. Mackenzie Loy and Meagan Logue added five points apiece.

Chief 8th grade wins

A pair of players scored in double figures as the East Jay eighth grade team dominated in its second straight game for a 38-16 win over the Bluffton Tigers Wednesday. The Chief seventh graders fell to 1-2 with a 25-21 loss.

The East Jay eighth graders (2-0) held Bluffton to nine points over the final three quarters as they pulled away for the 22-point win.

The squad defeated Winchester Driver in its opener Nov. 28 by a 39-16 final.

Lindsey Wellman was the top scorer for the Chiefs with 12 points. Shelby Gierhart followed right behind her with 11.

Abby Denney scored eight points for East Jay’s seventh graders, who managed just four first-half points and could not quite come back. Cara Garringer and Katie Butcher each added four points.

Eagles drop heart-breaker

DUNKIRK — West Jay dropped a couple of tight games to Union City Westside Wednesday. The eighth grade girls went to overtime before losing 32-25, and the seventh graders fell 20-19.

Amber McCowan and Jordyn Swearingen each had six points for the Eagle eighth grade team.

Brittany Muhlenkamp scored five points.

Melynda Brackman was the lone West Jay player to reach double digits, scoring 10 points for the seventh grade squad. Taylor Burris added five points.[[In-content Ad]]
