Jay freshmen edge Arabians (11/23/04)

PENDLETON — The Patriots trailed for the first three quarters. But, when it counted, they got the job done.

The Jay County freshman girls basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to edge the host Pendleton Heights Arabians 35-33.

The Patriots (2-0) were down 20-15 at halftime and remained behind by four heading into the final period. They outscored Pendleton Heights 9-3 in the fourth quarter to grab the victory.

Amber Edmundson set the pace for Jay County as she just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Brittany O’Dell also grabbed 10 rebounds and was one of four Patriots with six points each.

Sharon Dirksen, Shelby Rines and Dana Horn all finished with six points.

Eagle 7th unbeaten

DUNKIRK — West Jay’s seventh grade boys basketball team improved to 3-0 Monday with a 42-38 victory over Hartford City. The eighth graders suffered their first loss, 52-33.

The seventh grade Eagles dominated the middle two quarters by a 29-16 margin. Hartford City managed 17 points in the final quarter, but West Jay held on for the win.

Josh Beaty led the victory with 12 points, and Taylor Farmer joined him in double figures with 11. Drew Locke and Michael Daniels each scored five points.

West Jay’s eighth grade team (2-1) led by two at halftime, but scored just four points in the third quarter to fall behind 32-25. The Eagles allowed 20 fourth-quarter points in the defeat.

Brady Mills paced the team with 12 points. Jerid Conatser added six.

Fort freshmen fall

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s freshman girls basketball team battled with the Minster Wildcats for three quarters, but couldn’t stay with them in the fourth. Minster outscored the Indians 14-1 in the final period for the 26-11 win.

Both teams scored just two points in the first quarter, and Minster went up 9-6 at halftime. Fort Recovery cut the deficit to two points at the end of the third quarter before falling in the fourth.

Jen Nietfeld and Beth May each scored four points for the Tribe. Angie Wenning added three points.

Jay drops opener

PORTLAND — The Jay County A freshman boys basketball team struggled in its opener to a 39-24 loss to the Delta Eagles Monday.

The Patriots fell behind 13-4 in the first quarter and were unable to come back. They pulled to within five points at halftime, but were outscored in each of the final two quarters.

Michael Jobe paced Jay County with nine points. Brandon Buckland scored seven points, and Heath Rigby added four.

Jay County won the B game by an 18-5 count. Mark Alberson scored nine points, all on 3-pointers, and Joshua Ludy hit for six.

SA splits with Raiders

Nick Teeter finished with 20 points. But, the one he scored in overtime was the biggest.

Teeter’s overtime free throw accounted for the only score in the extra session as the South Adams seventh grade boys basketball team edged the Southern Wells Raiders 47-46 Monday. The eighth grade Starfires lost by a 43-27 final.

Teeter scored in each quarter, hitting a pair of 3-pointers on the way to his game-high total. Heath Moser joined him in double figures with 15 points, and Cody Bullard and Chase Ingle each scored four points.

The eighth grade team led 11-9 after the first period, but managed just three points in the next two quarters combined.

Cody Meshberger led the Starfires with 11 points. Kyle DeArmond had eight points, and Chris Stuteman scored six.[[In-content Ad]]
