Jay girls 2nd, boys 3rd at invite (05/12/03)


A pair of relay victories boosted the Jay County girls track team Friday at the Blackford Invitational, but it was not quite enough as the Patriots placed second with 117 points. New Haven won the meet with a total of 126, and host the host Bruins were third with 103.

In the boys competition Jay County placed third with 75 points. New Haven dominated the meet with 149 points for the win, and Blackford was second with 83 points.

The girls team got an opening victory with a win in the 3200-meter relay in 10:35.11. It also finished the meet in winning fashion, taking first in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:25.42.

However, the Patriots had just two individual victories in between to support the relays. Nicole VanSkyock was the first-place finisher in the 1600-meter run in 5:37.24, and Kristina Link took first in the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, nine inches.

VanSkyock added a third-place effort in the 800-meter run in 2:34.47, and Link was third in the discus at 96 feet, five and one-half inches.

Danielle Michael was second in the high jump at five feet for Jay County, and also placed second in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.6. Jamie Bruggeman was second in the 100-meter dash in 13.06, and took third in the 400-meter dash.

Beth Siegrist placed second in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, six inches.

The Patriot boys had just two victories on the evening, but one of them led a domination of the high jump.

Jay County took first and second place in the high jump, with Adam Grile leading the way as he cleared the bar at five feet, 10 inches. Kaleb Carpenter placed second in the event with a leap of five feet, nine inches.

The other top finish for Jay County came from Paul Imel. He was victorious in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.07.

David Stith added a pair of top-three finishes. He placed third in both the shot put and the discus with throws of 47 feet, four inches and 127 feet, nine inches respectively.

The other top three finish for the Patriots came from Steven Castillo, won was second in the long jump at 18 feet, five inches.

Jay County will host Muncie Central Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
