Jay girls cruise

HARTFORD CITY - The Patriots bounced back from an opening loss and turned in a dominant effort Tuesday.

Jay County High School's girls track team won all but two events and racked up 97 points in three-team action. Host Blackford was second with 54 points, and Muncie Southside finished with 13.

The JCHS boys team slipped to 0-3 as it posted 40 points to finish behind Southside (72) and Blackford (52).

Juniors Jordan McMillan and Megan Taylor and sophomores Katie Simmons and Maria Murphy all won two events to lead the Patriot girls.

McMillan fought off strong challenges to win both of her events, taking the 100-meter dash by just one hundredth of a second in 12.2 seconds. Her long jump of 14 feet, 7 ¾ inches was just one-half inch further than that of teammate Kelsey Wood.

Murphy added two more field-event wins, taking the shot put at 34 feet, 8 ½ inches and the discus at 97 feet, 7 ½ inches. Taylor swept the hurdles with times of 19.09 and 52.81 in the 100 and 300 respectively, and Simmons took the 1,600 run in 6-minutes, 12 seconds and also won the 800.

Leah Wellman took the 3,200 run in 13:41, and Macey Gerber picked up the 400 dash win in 1:09. Kari Hemmelgarn was part of two of Jay County's three relay wins.

Tevan Nichols picked up two of the three victories for the JCHS boys team. He was first in the 1,600 run in 5:08.81 and the 800 run with a time of 2:13.77.

Zach Cash earned the only other win with a time of 16.8 in the 110 hurdles. He was also second in the 300 hurdles.[[In-content Ad]]
