Jay girls dominate Selma (09/19/05)

SELMA — It was a good day all around for Jay County’s middle school girls teams Friday.

East Jay and West Jay accounted for three of the top four finishers in the girls race at the Selma Invitational. The Chiefs placed first with 36 points, and West Jay was fourth with 157.

Winchester Driver took second with 75, and Delta was third with 87.

Patrick Johnson and Tevan Nichols had another great day for the East Jay boys, leading them to a second-place finish with 96 points. Host Selma was first with 88, and Delta placed third with 101.

East Jay’s sixth and seventh grade boys finished fifth with 115 points. Delta was first with 23, and Driver followed with 90.

West Jay did not have enough runners to post scores in either boys race.

Union’s Marie Lumpkin won the girls race, but it was all Jay County after that as East Jay’s Leah Wellman took second in 12-minutes, 25 seconds. Kristen Selvey of West Jay was next in 12:40, and Katie Simmons of East Jay placed fourth in 12:45.

East Jay put three more runners in the top 15 with Lindsay Moser, Mallory Poole and Deidra Chenoweth providing a photo finish. The trio finished 11th, 12th and 13th respectively, all in times of 13:06, one second behind Daleville’s Karsen Corn and one second ahead of Michelle Fites of Shenandoah.

Ranae Ray rounded out the Chief team score in 13:24.

Following Selvey for West Jay were: Macy Gerber (26th - 13:55), Shannon Springer (39th - 14:36), Carli Weaver (42nd - 14:48) and Elizabeth Lennartz (47th - 15:13).

Johnson and Nichols finished together for the East Jay boys team. Johnson was just two seconds behind champion Caleb Coffin of Blue River in 10:45, and Nichols placed third five seconds behind his teammate.

Jeremiah Cotherman, the lone runner for West Jay, was 17th in 11:52.

Behind Johnson and Nichols for the Chiefs were: Bard Horn (21st - 12:01), Ben Brandt (25th - 12:08) and Adam Daniels (45th - 13:18).

The East Jay sixth and seventh grade team was led by Bradley Leuthold in 18th with a time of 12:29. The rest of the team score came from: Jarrett Kreig (21st - 12:36), Edward Muhlenkamp (23rd - 12:40), Evan Ryder (26th - 12:42) and Austin Bentz (27th - 12:46).

Chance Fuller was the top runner for West Jay in the sixth and seventh grade boys race in 45th at 13:32. Wesley Price was 52nd and Zach Johnson took 57th.[[In-content Ad]]
