Jay girls place 8th at Norwell (11/17/03)

The Jay County girls swim team opened its season with an eighth-place finish at the Norwell Invitational Saturday.

The Patriots scored 74 points to finish in front of Marion and Fort Wayne Wayne in the 10-team event. The host Knights won with a score of 288, with Oak Hill second at 229.

Senior Rachel McKee set the pace for Jay County with the team’s two best finishes on the day. She was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle.

McKee was also on the fifth-place 200-yard freestyle relay team with Sarah Miller, Amber Kelly and Julie Sours. She teamed with Vanessa Wilkins, Ashley Imel and Sours to place ninth in the 200-yard medley relay.

The next best individual effort came from Imel as she placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle. She added a 10th-place effort in the 100-yard butterfly.

Imel, Wilkins, Lindsey Vesperry and Brittany Laux teamed to place fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Jay County will open its dual meet season at Muncie Southside Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Jay rolls to 2-0

Felisha Parr crushed the Muncie Southside Rebels with a 27-point effort, leading the Jay County girls basketball team to a 73-51 victory Friday night.

Parr scored at least six points in each quarter to go with her 11 rebounds and five steals as the Patriots (2-0) dominated the game. They led by 23 after one quarter and 31 at halftime.

Lindsay Friddle finished with 10 points, and Markie Runyon and Lisa Weitzel each added eight. Runyon also came up with five rebounds and five steals.

Renae Laux had five rebounds and three steals, and Jamie Bruggeman dished out a pair of assists.

Tyronda Benning scored 16 points for Southside, 12 of which came in the final period. Te’ Aira Carey scored 10 points, all in the third quarter.

Jay County also dominated the junior varsity game to improve to 2-0 with a 47-18 victory.

Sara Garringer and Whitney Homan each reached double figures for the Patriots with 13 and 12 points respectively. Amber Champ, Miranda Betz and Ashley Bunch each had four points.

Ryesha Carey led the Rebels with six points.

Jay County will be back in action Friday at Bellmont at 6:30 p.m.

Boys opener postponed

The opening basketball game of the season for the Jay County boys basketball team has been postponed.

The Patriots will visit the Norwell Knights Friday, Jan. 9 at 6:15 p.m. The first game of the season for the team will now be at Bellmont Friday, Dec. 5 at 6:15 p.m.

Jay County was scheduled to open the season Wednesday, Nov. 26 against Norwell, but the Knights were involved in the state football tournament before losing this weekend.

Wrestling clinic

The Hoosier-Buckeye Wrestling Clinic for fourth through sixth graders will begin today at East Jay Middle School. It will be run by the East Jay and West Jay middle school wrestling coaches as well as former Jay County High School wrestlers.

The registration fee is $20 per athlete, and $15 for each additional athlete in the same family. The fee includes a T-shirt, handbook and a party at the end of the clinic.
