Jay girls top Marion for winning season (01/26/07)

MARION - After a three-year drought, the Jay County girls swim team can once again proclaim a winning season.

The Patriots scored a 115-70 victory over the Marion Giants in their final regular-season meet Thursday, giving them an 8-6 record for the year. It marks their first winning campaign since 2002-03.

The boys team (3-8) came away with another close loss, 97-89.

Senior Ashley Horn and sophomore Cori Vormohr led Jay County's girls, which finished 6-8 a year ago, to victory with a pair of individual wins apiece. Tom McCord had the only two individual first-place efforts for the boys team.

Horn opened the evening with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2-minutes, 24.06 seconds. She added her second win in style, putting up a career-best mark of 6:27.46 in the 500 freestyle.

Vormohr's wins each came by wide margins as she posted times of 1:03.47 in the 100 butterfly and 1:13.53 in the 100 breaststroke.

Ivy Simons matched Horn with a career-best time as she turned in the other individual win for the Patriots. She led a one-two finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:16.69 with teammate Caitlin Ruchgy in second.

McCord took his wins in the mid-range freestyle events for the Jay County boys, who have suffered many of their eight losses by small margins.

The junior just missed cracking the two-minute mark in the 200 freestyle as he finished in 2:00.02. He led a one-two result in the 100 freestyle as he edged teammate Sam Miller by less than one second in 52.67.

The girls team's two relay wins both came from the quartet of Tina Gingrasso, Briann Saxman, Michelle Landfair and Vormohr. They posted winning times of 1:52.98 in the 200 freestyle relay and also reached the wall first in the 400 freestyle relay.

For the boys team Lance VanSkyock, Aaron Hudson, Scott Walker and Miller took the 200 medley relay in 1:59.68. Hudson, McCord, Walker and Andres Ayesta teamed for the 200 freestyle relay win in 1:38.24.[[In-content Ad]]
