Jay golfers finish in regional (06/14/03)

The Jay County golf team finished its season in regional competition at Edgewood Country Club in Anderson Friday with a score of 328.

The score had it in sixth place, with Carmel first (307) and Delta second (310), but final stats were not available. Several teams were still waiting to finish their rounds after a two-hour rain delay.

Tyler Johnston turned in the best round for the Patriots, shooting a 78. Alex Hunt and Jesse Shawver each finished with 83s, Ben Freeman had an 85, and Adam Foster shot an 88.

Junior League

In Portland Junior League Willie Mays League games Thursday Pak-A-Sak defeated PG-14 21-4, and Ja-Mar T.V. and Appliance knocked off MainSource Bank 17-7.

Kyle Markle knocked four hits to lead Pak-a-Sak. Skyler Petty picked up the win.

Brandon Haffner had a double for PG-14.

One of Jacob McGraw’s two hits in the Ja-Mar victory was a home run. Ty Huntsman was the winning pitcher.

Drew Houck smashed two hits for MainSource.

Jay 2nd in OAC

Jay County finished second in the overall Olympic Athletic Conference standings for the 2002-2003 season, the highest finish ever by the Patriots.

They finished with 33 points in the all-sports standings, three behind Huntington North in the boys sports. They had the same total on the girls side, also ending up behind Huntington North’s 38 points.

Points are awarded to each school based on their placing within the conference in each sport.

Football camps

The Jay County High School football camps run by coach Shane Hill, his staff and players will be June 23 through 26.

There will be two camps, one at JCHS from 8 to 10 a.m., and the second at West Jay Middle School from 1 to 3 p.m. The camps are for those who will be in seventh, eighth and ninth grade for the 2003-2004 school year.

The cost of each camp is $15, which includes a T-shirt. The deadline to sign-up is Saturday, June 21.

Soccer notes

More dates for soccer open gyms at the Jay Community Center have been released.

There will be open gyms for 7- and 8-year-olds Monday, June 16 and Monday, June 23 from 1 to 2 p.m. They will be held for 9- through 12-year-olds Tuesday, June 17, Thursday, June 19, Tuesday, June 24 and Thursday, June 26 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Open gyms for those ages 12 through 14 will be Wednesday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 25 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Also, the sign-up period for those interested in playing on the traveling soccer team this fall is under way.

The Jay County Soccer Club will have traveling teams for ages 10-and-under, 12-and-under and 14-and-under for both boys and girls. The deadline to register is June 18.

There will be a Jay County Soccer Club meeting Thursday, June 19 at the Jay Community Center from 6 to 7 p.m.
