Jay golfers win sixth in a row (05/06/05)

PORTLAND — Three rounds in the 30s powered the Jay County boys golf team to its sixth and seventh wins of the season Thursday over Bluffton and Bellmont.

Jay County (7-1), which has now won six in a row, finished with a 153 on the front nine at Portland Golf Club. Bellmont shot a 172, and Bluffton was third with a 180.

Patriot No. 1 Tyler Johnston opened his round with a birdie on the 335-yard, par-4 first hole. He added five pars in his round to finish with a 2-over 37.

Nathan McClung matched Johnston’s opening birdie and went back-to-back with a birdie on the 176-yard, par-3 second. He and Alex Hunt each finished with 38s as Jay County posted the three best scores of the day.

Adam Foster birdied the 471-yard, par-5 sixth for a 40, and Ben Freeman also shot 40. Josh Thornburg finished with a 42.

Highland tops softball

PORTLAND — The Jay County softball team stumbled in the first two innings and could not recover in a 6-0 loss to the Anderson Highland Scots Thursday.

Highland scored twice in the first inning and four times in the second to take the advantage. Both teams went scoreless the rest of the way, and the Patriots (5-10) finished with just five hits.

Shae Keller allowed six runs — three earned — on six hits to take the loss. She walked five batters and did not record a strikeout.

Trisha Champ had two of the Jay County hits and also stole a base. Saffron Redwine, Erica Murray and Morgan Locke added one hit apiece.

Sertech wins again

Two days, two wins for Sertech Heating and Cooling.

Sertech won for the second straight day to open the Portland Junior League Minor League softball season Thursday, defeating Crossroads Financial FCU 22-2 in four innings.

LeAnne Horn had three hits and four runs for Sertech, and Brooke Fouch, Rachelle Jackson and Emily Devoe each had three hits and three runs. Gabby Cross and Renae Rae added three hits apiece.

Stephanie Hudson had the only hit for Crossroads.

In the other Minor League game on the night Portland Optimist defeated Indoor Comfort by Vance 11-1.

Lexie Gierhart paced Optimist by going 4-for-4 with a double and three runs. Kayla Sager had two hits, including a double, and two runs.

Shelby Affolder singled and scored the only run for Vance.

Club to start

The sign-up session for the newly-formed Jay County Running and Walking Club will be Saturday, May 21 at the Jay County High School track.

The session with be from 10 a.m. to noon, and the registration fee is $20. Registration forms and a calendar of events is available at JCHS and East Jay and West Jay middle schools.
