Jay grad earns berth in nationals (06/04/05)

Kerri McClung’s seventh-place finish in the regional was not good enough to send her to the national tournament on its own. But her season as a whole was.
McClung, a 2000 graduate of Jay County now competing at Bowling Green, had a toss of 51 feet, one inch at the NCAA regional meet at Indiana University Sunday. That mark placed her seventh, a half-inch behind April Thomas of Tennessee and more than six feet back of champion Amarachi Ukabam (57 feet, 53/4 inches) of Southern Illinois.
That toss didn’t earn her a national berth. However, anyone finishing in the top eight in regional competition is considered for a trip to nationals based on their performances throughout the season.
McClung’s launch of 52 feet, 81/4 inches at the Wright/Campbell Open — which broke her own school record for the second time this season — bumped her up to the next level. She will compete at the NCAA National Championships in Sacramento, Calif. beginning Tuesday.
Trent Bailey
The senior who played for Jay County boys basketball teams which posted winning records in each of his three varsity seasons and won two sectional titles during that span will be expected to help carry on a winning tradition at the next level as well.
Bailey announced this week that he will head to Springfield, Ohio this fall to play for the Wittenberg University men’s basketball team.
Wittenberg boasts the all-time winningest NCAA Division III program, having appeared in 23 of the last 30 national tournaments. The Tigers have garnered 42 tournament victories, six Final Four appearances and were 25-4 in 2004-05.
Bailey, who averaged 13.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists as a senior, finished fifth on Jay County’s all-time scoring list with 853 points.
He set the single-game 3-point record with nine against Union City during his junior season and holds the career 3-point record with 142, including 77 as a junior.[[In-content Ad]]
