Jay grapplers defeat Giants

MARION — Austin Bentz’s win kicked off a run of eight straight for the Patriots.
After dropping three of Thursday’s first four matches, the Jay County High School wrestling team earned victories in every match from 138 to 285 pounds on the way to a 58-24 victory over the Marion Giants.
Bentz knocked off Marion’s Xavier Washington in 4 minutes, 51 seconds, and Eric Beougher (170) and Kyle Garringer (195) each added first-period pins during the run. Each of the Patriots’ other five victories that built a 50-point lead came by forfeit from Jesse Finnerty (145), Zac Metcalf (152), Nick Leonhard (160), Hunter Gillette (182) and Nick Spahr (220).
Conner Ray (120) picked up the other win for Jay County, pinning Jason McMullen in 1:24.

JC girls top Squaws
DECATUR — Jay County and Bellmont split the individual girls swimming events Thursday, but the Patriots won all three relays to take a 109-74 victory. The JCHS boys lost 118-65 to the Braves.
Mary Hudson, Eme Miller, Caitlin Mark and Katy Smeltzer teamed for the three relay wins, posting times of 2:03.13 in the 200-yard medley, 1:48.25 in the 200 freestyle and 4:03.06 in the 400 freestyle. Three of them added individual wins, with Mark and teammate Marissa Murrell going one-two in the 100 butterfly in 1:10.35 and 1:11.25 respectively. Miller was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:27.93, and Hudson won the 100 backstroke in 1:11.97.
Rachel Vogler (165.25) and Sammi Compton (158.65) finished first and second respectively in diving.
Alex Sutton picked up the lone swimming win for the JCHS boys in the 500 freestyle in 5:42.81, and Remington Arnold won diving with 119.65 points.

SA boys eliminated
FORT WAYNE — The South Adams boys basketball team could not contain the Leo Lions in a 105-80 loss Thursday in the semifinal round of the Allen County Athletic Conference Tournament at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The Starfires (4-8), who defeated Woodlan by one in the opening round, gave up at least 22 points in every quarter and 59 combined in the second and third. Leo (6-4) had scored 80 against SAHS in their meeting on Jan. 7.
Blake Fox led four South Adams players in double figures with 19 points. Scott Hoeppner added 17 points, Dustin Wanner scored 14 and Chase Mosser had 12.
Mosser totaled eight rebounds and four steals, and Wanner had six boards and four assists.
The Lions advance to play Bluffton for the ACAC championship at noon Saturday at the coliseum.

Eagles rally to win
DUNKIRK — West Jay Middle School’s boys basketball team came back for a 29-28 victory Thursday over the Eastbrook Panthers.
The Eagles trailed 14-10 at the half before rallying for the one-point win. Eastbrook scored 18 of its 28 points at the foul line.
Dan Meranda powered WJMS with a double-double, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Drew Huffman had two points, five rebounds and four assists.

FR 8th loses first
COLDWATER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery eighth grade boys basketball team suffered its first loss Thursday, falling 37-31 to the Coldwater Cavaliers in double overtime. The seventh graders lost 42-23.
Jackson Hobbs had eight points for the Tribe eighth graders (8-1), who led by five after three quarters but scored just six points the rest of the way. Chase Bruns added six points.
Caleb Martin finished with 14 points as the FRMS seventh grade squad fell to 3-6. Jason Roessner scored four points.

Hudson lifts Chiefs
WINCHESTER — Kyler Hudson hit the game-winning shot Thursday, lifting the East Jay seventh grade boys basketball team to a 40-39 victory over host Driver. The eighth graders lost, 50-30.
East Jay’s seventh grade team (7-2) trailed by one before Hudson hit the game-winner with less than three seconds left. Ryan Burkett had 11 points to lead the Chiefs, and Jason Schlosser added 10.
Adam Dirksen totaled nine points as the EJMS eighth graders slipped to 3-8. Bryce Hensley and Bowen Runyon added five points apiece.

EJ wrestlers roll
All of the East Jay wrestling team’s victories Thursday came either by pin or forfeit as the Chiefs rolled to an 84-12 victory over visiting Muncie Northside.
Tyler Leonhard  started a run of five consecutive pins for EJMS with his victory at 127 pounds. Matt Blackford (137), Levi Hummel (147), Nick Lairson (154) and Andy Kohler (162) also added pins during the run.
Other pins for the Chiefs came from Henry Hemmelgarn (82) and Graham Haines (117).[[In-content Ad]]
