CONNERSVILLE — Those Connersville Spartans did it again.

As is becoming the pattern, the Jay County gymnastics team went into Saturday’s Olympic Athletic Conference meet confident they could beat Connersville, but came away empty handed. The host Spartans took their 15th conference championship in 16 years with 96.35 points while the Patriots finished second with 95.05 points.

Huntington North was third at 91.05 points, and Muncie Southside was a distant fourth.

Connersville was led by freshman Kristin Gilley, who edged Jay County sophomore Hannah Williams for first place in every event in what is likely to be quite the rivalry for the next two seasons.

Gilley took the all-around title with a total of 35.65 points. Her top score came on the floor exercise with a 9.3, and she added a 9.15 on the uneven parallel bars, an 8.7 on the vault and an 8.5 on the balance beam.

Williams, who had to water down her routines somewhat because of nagging ankle pain, totaled 33.4 in the all-around competition. Jay County was also without junior Lacey Grider, who is likely out for the season with a torn ACL in her left knee, and freshman Lacey Thornburg, who will be out about another week after suffering a foot injury Wednesday against Muncie Central.

The top team score for the Patriots came on the floor, one of the two events in which they outdistanced the Spartans on the day. Williams led the squad with an 8.85, Brittany Bauman was second an 8.05 and Melissa Fifer took third with an 7.8.

Jay County also had a higher team total than Connersville on the balance beam where Williams notched a 7.9. Fifer took second in that event with a 7.55, and Bauman was third with a 7.25.

But, those two events could not overcome the Patriots’ nearly two-point disadvantage on the bars. Gilley’s score in the event accounted for much of the disparity, but teammate Courtney Hurst was just a notch behind Williams’ second-place 8.00 with a 7.95 of her own.

Connersville’s Jamie Easley placed fifth with a 7.5 to give the Spartans a 24.45 total on the bars. Amanda Knight was fourth for the Patriots with a 7.5, and Kayla Smith and Bauman tied for seventh at 7.05 for a team total of 22.55

Jay County trailed the Spartans by just five hundredths on the vault, with Williams second with an 8.65 and Knight scoring an 8.35 for third. Bauman tied for fourth with Hurst with an 8.1.

The Patriots now must move on to their next goal, winning a second straight sectional title. They have three dual meets left before the Muncie Central sectional, starting at home against Richmond Wednesday at 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
