PORTLAND — As the season comes to a close the Jay County girls golf team just keeps getting better. The Patriots got three personal-best rounds Friday — two by a pair of seniors in their final home meet — en route to the best team score of the season, a 201.
Jay County defeated Blackford (220) and Southern Wells (242) in the three-team meet at Portland Country Club.
“It’s a great way to go into sectional,” said Jay County coach Tom Ferguson, whose team’s total was 25 strokes better than the best score from a year ago. “This has definitely been the best they’ve played all year as a team.”
The Patriots (6-7) have now posted team-best scores in back-to-back meets, having shot a 204 on each side of the course at the Olympic Athletic Conference meet Monday. Their previous team-best was a 206.
Trisha Champ continued her season-long streak of turning in the best individual score for Jay County as she had four pars and a birdie in the first six holes on the way to a personal-best 40. She shot a 41 Monday, and her previous best was a 43.
She was the match medalist. Alyssa Hyatt had the top score for Blackford with a 43, and Heather Roush and Elizabeth Lewellen each shot 57 for Southern Wells.
Champ had an amazing shot to finish the opening hole, chipping in from 30 feet away for a par on the 275-yard, par-4 first.
She hit her drive on the 113-yard, par-3 second over the green, but hit a perfect second shot. Her chip onto the downhill green stopped three feet from the hole and she nailed the putt for another par.
After a double-bogey on the third hole she parred the 290-yard, par-4 fourth and the 349-yard, par-4 fifth.
Champ then dropped a birdie putt on the 401-yard, par-5 sixth to sit at 1-over par with just three holes to play. She just missed shooting in the 30s for the first time in her career as she three-putted each of the final two holes.
“Trisha is just enjoying the game of golf I think,” said Ferguson. “I don’t think she has any idea yet how good she could be. The great start was key
“I’m proud of her. I think she has a very good chance to get out of sectional Saturday.”
Champ was backed up by Jay County’s two seniors, Brianne Morrical and Shonda Sutton.
Morrical shot in the 40s for just the second time in her career, matching her best score ever with a 49.
Morrical bogeyed the first hole, but came back to even as she hit her drive on the second hole to within five feet of the pin and dropped the putt for a birdie. She went on to par the fourth hole, and for the most part avoided trouble as she closed out her career at PCC.
Sutton’s round was keyed by her play on the par-3s.
She left her first shot on No. 2 short of the green, but chipped on and two-putted for the first of her two bogeys. She also shot 1-over par on the 119-yard, par-3 eighth hole and didn’t score anything higher than a seven as she carded a 53.
“That’s great,” said Ferguson of the efforts from his seniors. “Both seniors have been outstanding leaders on the team this year.
“Brianne has made tremendous improvement from last year. For a second-year player, she’s done great.
“Shonda just hits straight. She’s probably played the most consistent of any of the girls on the team this year.”
Alissa McMillan rounded out the Patriots’ team score Tuesday with a 59, which included a bogey on the eighth hole. Katey Kohler finished with a 64.
Ferguson said with the way his team has played lately, he thinks they can make a huge improvement over last year’s sectional finish. They will compete in the Norwell sectional at Parlor City Country Club in Bluffton Saturday.
Jay County placed ninth in an 11-team field in 2003. It is still not in a position to compete for a top-three finish and a regional berth, but could definitely battle for fourth place. Bellmont was fourth last year with a 410.
Champ does have a shot at an individual regional berth. Nora Didrick of Fort Wayne North Side and Abby Waltke of Fort Wayne Bishop Luers picked up the final two regional spots last season with 91s.
“They just need to be smart and do the best job they can to avoid the penalties,” said Ferguson. “I’d love to see the girls finish around fifth place.
“It’s great that they’re playing their best golf at the end of the year.”[[In-content Ad]]
