PORTLAND — It was clear the Patriots were the better team on the court Tuesday. They finally started to show it in the second half after a lackluster performance in the first.

Jay County scored 27 third-quarter points — compared to 29 in the first half — and played much better after the intermission in a 69-42 victory over the Anderson Highland Scots in Olympic Athletic Conference girls basketball action.

Lindsay Friddle, Lisa Weitzel and Felisha Parr scored 23 of those 27 points as the team bounced back from a 25-percent shooting effort in the first half. Weitzel and Parr took turns sparking the offense.

Weitzel kick-started the Patriots, hitting 3-pointers from the left corner on each of their first two possessions. A hoop by Jamie Bruggeman followed, pushing Jay County’s lead to 37-21.

Then, leading 45-28 with three minutes to go in the third quarter, Parr got her game working. Playing limited minutes because of an ankle injury, she used her time well by scoring seven consecutive points for a 24-point Patriot advantage.

Parr scored 11 of her 15 points in the third period, finishing 6-of-7 from the field in the contest. Friddle scored six points in the period on the way to her game-high 18.

Weitzel also had six as she had a 14-point night which included a 4-of-8 effort from 3-point range. She is now shooting an outstanding 44 percent from long range this year.

“We did pick it up a little bit offensively,” said Jay County coach Lea Selvey. “I think once Felisha got in and got into a little bit of a flow she was able to play well. That was one thing that got us going. And, our defense picked it up.”

“We hustled more,” added Friddle of the second-half effort. “We basically got more aggressive.

“We had a big discussion about boxing out (at halftime). That was our biggest flaw.”

Jay County (6-3, 2-0 OAC) was outrebounded for the third straight contest, but did rebound and shoot much better in the second half than the first.

The Patriots shot just 8-of-32 (25 percent) in the first half, with both teams going cold at the end of the first quarter. Neither team scored for more than four minutes before Weitzel hit the first of her four 3-pointers with four seconds remaining.

In addition, Jay County wasn’t chasing down its misses or doing much on the defensive glass as the Scots held a 37-15 rebounding advantage at halftime. At that point, four different Anderson Highland players were on pace for double-digit rebounds.

The improvement saw the Patriots win the battle of the boards in the second half, although they still trailed for the game. Five-foot-four guard Saffron Redwine gave them a nice spark, coming off the bench to grab all of her six rebounds in the fourth quarter.

They also shot 15-of-23 (65 percent) after the break to bring their game total up to a respectable 42 percent.

“We’ve shown that we can survive bad shooting, survive some things we’re not doing well and still come up with a 27-point win,” said Selvey, referring to the first-half problems. “To me, rebounding is all attitude and effort.”

His team will now take a week off before hosting Blackford Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Anderson Highland (2-5, 1-1 OAC) did show plenty of hustle, with four different girls grabbing as many or more boards as the Jay County leader (Weitzel 7).

Erin Looper paced the team all-around, snatching 16 rebounds to go along with 12 points. Carmen Moss had nine rebounds, Jessica McCleery added eight and Casey Herrington had seven.

Even 5-foot-1 freshman Nikki Scott pulled down six boards to go along with her nine points.

Still, even though a third of their points came on second-chance buckets, the Scots didn’t shoot nearly well enough to be in the game.

They finished just 29 percent from the field and 33 percent from the foul line. They also turned the ball over 31 times.

Junior varsity

The junior varsity contest Tuesday was never close as the Patriots took a 59-14 victory over Anderson Highland.

Jay County outscored the Scots 16-4 in the first period, then held them scoreless in the second for a 30-4 halftime lead. The second half was more of the same as the Patriots cruised to the 45-point win.

Sara Garringer and Whitney Homan each scored 12 points. Amber Champ followed with nine points, and Miranda Betz added seven.

Paige Wooten paced Anderson Highland with four points, and Whitney Hoffman had three.[[In-content Ad]]
