Jay joins OAC deadlock (05/21/04)

Local Roundup

If the Olympic Athletic Conference standings were going to be muddled, the Patriots figured they might as well be a part of the first-place cluster.

The Jay County baseball team created a four-way tie for first place in the OAC with its 10-5 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels Thursday. Southside finished at 0-8, and each of the four other teams — Jay County, Anderson Highland, Connersville and Huntington North — each completed the conference schedule at 5-3.

The Patriots (13-8), who defeated Southside 10-0 at home Tuesday, trailed 2-1 after one inning Thursday before taking the lead for good.

Designated hitter Josh Shatto hit a one-out double in the second, and Heath Williams followed with an RBI single. Williams stole second base, and Trent Bailey drove him in with a double for the 3-2 lead.

Jay County scored three more runs in the third inning, four in the fourth and one in the fifth.

John Retter finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Adam Brandt had two hits, two RBIs and a run, and Bailey finished with two hits, an RBI and a run.

Williams scored twice and drove in one run, and Shatto had three runs and an RBI.

Mike Smith got the win, allowing five runs on five hits in four innings. He struck out five batters.

Chad Keen finished the contest by striking out four batters and walking one in three scoreless and hitless innings.

The Patriots will host Richmond tonight at 5 p.m.

Fort blasts Jay

Their tournament run was over, but the Indians still had some work to do Thursday. The Fort Recovery softball team extended its school-record win total in its final game of the season with an 11-1, six-inning beating of the Jay County Patriots.

The Tribe, which finished in a tie for first in the Midwest Athletic Conference for the first time in school history, ended the year at 18-8. The previous record for wins of 15 was set last season.

Fort Recovery scored nine runs in the third and fourth innings, and added two more in the sixth for an 11-0 lead. Jay County got its only run in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.

Krystal Rammel finished with a pair of hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Tribe. Kelsie Will had two hits, two runs, one RBI and a stolen base, and Renee Evers had two hits, including a double, and one run.

Ciera Rammel had three RBIs and a run, and Megan Wenning had two runs and an RBI.

In career finales senior Joscie Kaup had one hit, two runs and two stolen bases, and senior Lisa Grisez had one hit, two runs and an RBI.

Senior Julie Smith won the final start of her career to finish the season at 11-4. She allowed two hits and a walk, and struck out three in three innings.

Alyssa Tobe allowed one run on four hits in three innings of relief.

Chelsea DeBoy had a hit and an RBI for Jay County (9-16), and Stephanie Imel had a hit and a run.

Ashleigh Myers allowed nine runs — seven earned — on eight hits in 41/3 innings in the defeat.

The Patriots will head to tournament action against Mississinewa at Blackford Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Stein moving on

Fort Recovery will have at least one athlete, and possibly more, competing in regional track action.

Holly Stein earned herself a berth in the regional meet by finishing third in the shot put at the Minster district meet Thursday. She finished with a toss of 34 feet, seven inches.

The meet will continue Saturday, with Indians Jason Groff and Mitch Fullenkamp competing the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run. Kristi Westgerdes will run the 100- and 200-meter dash, and Vicki Roessner will take part in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

Tom Roessner will compete in the 110-meter hurdles.[[In-content Ad]]
