Jay netters break record vs. Falcons (09/14/07)
JCHS boys tennis
WINCHESTER - Records are made to be broken. For this one, it didn't take long.
The Jay County High School boys tennis program had its best season in 30 years of school history in 2005. Two years later, that effort has already been topped.
The Patriots won their 13th match of the year Thursday, defeating the Winchester Golden Falcons 4-1.
Jay County has now won 12 straight matches - the only loss came in the second match of the season against Norwell - for a 13-1 mark overall.
The previous record for regular-season wins was 12 in 2005, when the team added three tournament wins and finished at 15-4.
The group of Patriot varsity mainstays over the course of the last two seasons all rolled to victory in two sets against Winchester, including a 12th-straight victory for Phil Powell at No. 2 singles. The junior blanked Gabe Detro in the opening set and improved to 12-4 with his 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Adam Horn and Mark Alberson pushed their team-best mark to 16-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dusty Grubbs and Quenton Fair at No. 2 doubles, and Josh Ludy (15-1) cruised through his second set at No. 1 singles for a 6-4, 6-1 win over Brock Edwards.
At No. 1 doubles Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby finished off Daniel Maggart and Spencer Cook 6-3, 6-3 to improve to 12-5.
Those six players - at four varsity positions - have combined for a 55-12 record on the season. Jay County also won its first outright Olympic Athletic Conference championship this year.
Chase Wellman, filling in for the injured Kyle Simmons at No. 3 singles, lost a tough match Thursday 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 to Jerrin Fair.
Jared Valentine also took a heart-breaking defeat in the lone junior varsity match as he fell 8-7 (7-5) against Bruce Culy.[[In-content Ad]]
