Jay netters surge back above .500 with shutout (09/19/03)

Jay County Roundup

The Jay County tennis team is back where it wants to be after a 5-0 drubbing of the Winchester Golden Eagles Thursday.

The Patriots upped their record to 7-6, putting them back above .500 after a streak of five losses in six matches earlier this year. The victory over Winchester marked the third this week Jay County.

Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby flew off the court quickly, shutting out Thad Blunk and Josh Geesy 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. No one else put a goose egg on the board for the Patriots, but they were all close.

Kentaro Ohgo gave up the most games (four) at No. 2 singles as he improved to 5-0 this year with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Peter Wallace. No. 1 singles player Kurtis Hess is now 12-4 on the year after a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dustin Waber.

Derek Powell smashed Dan Wegg 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and Chip Feazell and Adam Paxson rolled over Patrick Williams and Nathaniel Detro 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 doubles match.

The junior varsity team split the only two matches of the night.

Wil Goodrich fell in a marathon eight-game, pro set match to Brad Moore 8-7 (7-3). Travis Smith defeated Zach Pegg at No. 2 singles 8-3.

Jay County’s winning streak will face a stout challenge Tuesday when the Patriots head to Delta for a match against the No. 6 Eagles at 4:30 p.m.

Jay JV stumbles

Jay County’s junior varsity squad managed to dig out of a mammoth game-one deficit, but couldn’t do it in the last two in a 17-21, 21-10, 21-11 loss to Blackford.

The Patriots trailed 15-5 in the first game, but scored the next seven points to cut the lead to three. The Bruins took a 17-16 lead, only to have Jay County score the final four points for the win.

Erica McIntire had two kills in the final four points, including the game-winner. After trailing by 10, the Patriots scored 16 of the final 18 points for the victory.

However, the Bruins built an 11-point lead in the second game and an eight-pointer in the third and Jay County could not recover.

Miranda Tingley had four points — all on aces — and 13 assists for the Patriots. McIntire had six kills, and Markie Runyon followed with five.

Julie Sours recorded 10 digs, and Janae Roush had nine.

Patriot freshmen rally

The Jay County freshman volleyball team roared back for a 13-21, 21-13, 23-21 victory over Blackford.

The Patriots (2-1) trailed 20-17, but scored four points in a row — one on a Mary Spencer ace and one on a Maria Miller kill — to save the game. Blackford pulled even at 21-21, but a kill by Carissa Wilkins returned the lead to Jay County.

The Patriots won the match on a double-hit by the Bruins.

Spencer had team-highs with 12 digs, eight points — including six aces — and one block. Erica Clark finished with four points — all on aces — three kills and nine assists.

Wilkins had eight digs, Miller notched four kills and Lacey VanSkyock scored six points.[[In-content Ad]]
