MUNCIE - The singles players led the Jay County High School boys tennis team to a second-place finish at Saturday's Olympic Athletic Conference tournament.
The Patriots opened with a singles sweep for a 3-2 win over Anderson Highland, fell 4-1 to champion Connersville and defeated host Muncie Southside 4-1.
Kyle Simmons, who opened the season 0-2, pushed his record to 10-3 with a perfect day at No. 2 singles. He just missed a shutout against Gary McNeary of Muncie Southside in a 6-1, 6-0 victory, defeated Highland's Taylor Williams 6-5, 6-2 and topped Alex Riebsomer 6-4, 6-4 to Alex Riebsomer of Connersville.
No. 1 and 3 players Phil Powell and Chase Wellman each went 2-1 with victories over Highland and Southside. Powell won 6-1, 6-4 over Zach Welborn of Highland and beat Cody Norvell of Southside 6-2, 6-4, and Wellman won 6-2, 2-0 when Southside's Nick Albertson retired and beat Highland's Rishi Patel 6-1, 6-3.
The lone victory for the Jay County doubles teams came in the match against Southside. Adam Horn and Jared Valentine won at No. 1 doubles 7-5, 6-2 over Ryan Brand and Mason Adams.[[In-content Ad]]
