PORTLAND — The Panthers hadn’t played a Class 3A opponent all year. If their experience at Jay County was any indication, they’d rather not play another.

The Patriots dominated Eastbrook from start to finish, winning their fourth consecutive game while handing the visiting Panthers just their fourth loss all year by a 73-32 final.

“That’s probably as well as we’ve executed,” said Jay County coach Craig Teagle, whose team shot a sparkling 61 percent. “I think we got them back on their heels early and then they played a little bit timid.

“We’ve seen them. They’re a much better basketball team than that.”

But it didn’t show against the Patriots (9-5), who scored at least 17 points in every quarter en route to their highest scoring game of the season. Six different players scored nine points or more, with junior Randy Evans leading the team with a career-high 14 points. Evans hit each of his first four 3-pointers and finished 4-of-5 from long distance.

Mark Kelly shot 5-of-6 from the field for 11 points. John Retter, who made each of his first four field goal attempts and went 5-of-6 overall, and Trent Bailey each reached double figures with 10 points apiece.

Zac Green and Corey Comer were both 3-of-4 from the field, scoring nine points each.

“Everybody played well tonight,” said Evans, who was also one of four Patriots to dish out three or more assists. “(It was) a lot of passing, hitting the open guy.

“The momentum pretty much was on our side the whole way.”

Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman led the team to 18 assists on 27 made baskets as he finished with five. Evans, Bailey and Comer each added three assists.

The Patriots finished with just four turnovers, compared to 13 for Eastbrook.

“We really executed,” said Green. “We got the ball spread out a lot. It really helped our whole team.”

Jay County was up 7-5 in the fist quarter, when Rigby hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 9-0 run. It was ahead 37-14 after closing the first half on a 10-0 run, and had a double-digit lead throughout the final three quarters.

The Patriot starters were on the bench for most of the second half, allowing a some others to get on the highlight real.

First, senior guard Michael Myers drained a 3-pointer, his first of the season, at the third quarter buzzer. Then freshman Clint Muhlenkamp scored the first varsity points of his career on a put-back with about three minutes left in the game.

“Jay County is the best team we’ve played all year,” said Eastbrook coach Joel Roush, whose team had won four of its last five with its only loss during the stretch coming by eight points to Class 4A Marion. “We just weren’t getting some things done defensively. And we couldn’t score.”

Eastbrook (9-4) trailed by 15 midway through the second period when they lost 6-foot-5 center Nathan Seaman to an ankle injury, and the game just got worse for it from their. It was the biggest win for Jay County since Kevin Bruggeman set what was then the single-game 3-point record by hitting eight in an 81-36 destruction of Union City in 2003. It was the worst loss for the Panthers in more than a decade.

Daniel Watson, who shot just 3-of-11 from the field, finished as the leading Eastbrook scorer with eight points. Todd Leas, who scored 32 points in the loss to Marion, and Jason Burnett each added five. Leas also grabbed five rebounds.

The Patriots went ice cold for much of the second half, but Rhett Retter caught fire in the closing minutes to preserve a 48-34 victory over Eastbrook.

Retter scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the final period to get Jay County over the hump. He hit four 3-pointers in the contest.

The Patriots (11-3) were up by 12 at the half, but watched all of that lead disappear as Eastbrook pulled to within two points in the fourth quarter. Retter put an end to that run, hitting a 3-point from the left baseline at the 2:18 mark of the fourth quarter and another from the left wing with 1:48 to play. The Panthers never got closer than six points after that.

Luke McClung followed Retter with nine points. Randy Evans and Clint Muhlenkamp each added five.

Kyle Bragg scored 10 points to pace Eastbrook. Austin Reutebuch added seven points, and Ryan Boucher added six.[[In-content Ad]]
