The Jay County High School baseball team was state ranked in Class 3A during the 2007 season.

It has been even better this year. It just took Class 4A a little time to notice.

The Patriots cracked the top 10 for the first time this season in this week's Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, earning the No. 5 ranking in Indiana's largest class.

Jay County, which is 13-1, earned 29 poll points. Carmel and Penn were tied for third with 45, and Castle and Cathedral finished tied for sixth with 25.

Crown Point (16-1) earned five first-place votes and the No. 1 ranking, and Brownsburg was voted No. 2. Other notable teams in the poll were No. 10 Huntington North, which is in the same sectional group as JCHS, and Indianapolis North Central, which finished 22nd in the voting and will play the Patriots Saturday in the opening game of the Indy Baseball Classic.

It has been a banner year thus far for Jay County, which can clinch the Olympic Athletic Conference championship today with a victory at home over Connersville. The team has already hit a school-record 34 home runs - the previous mark was 27, set last season - and is on pace to match the state record of 68 set by Marion in 1998.

The Patriots still have 13 regular season games on the schedule, as well as at least one tournament game. Twelve of their homers have come in the last three games against Fort Recovery (3), Delta (4) and Muncie Southside (5).

The South Adams softball team also appeared in the state poll this week, although it dropped just out of the Indiana High School Coaches of Girls Sports top 10 after being ranked sixth a week earlier.

The Starfires finished 11th in the Class 2A voting, just two points behind No. 10 Union County (15-1). Fairfield and Frankton tied for 12th with 38 points, and Scecina (15-4) topped the poll with eight of nine first-place votes and 134 points.

A seven-game winning streak to open the season got SAHS noticed in the poll. It followed with three straight losses, but has since won three in a row, including two in five innings, to push its record to 10-3.[[In-content Ad]]
