Jay rolls in sectional opener

JCHS softball

FORT WAYNE — Another battle with Huntington North is on the horizon.
The Jay County High School softball team was dominant in its opening tournament game, throttling the Fort Wayne South Side Archers 14-0 in five innings in the opening round of the Class 4A Sectional 6 tournament at Homestead.
The Patriots had everything working as they posted their highest run total since beating Muncie Southside 18-8 on April 23 while Nikka Chaney tossed a two-hitter. They will play Huntington North, a team they lost to 3-0 in the sectional semifinal round last season and fell to 6-5 in eight innings this year, in semifinal action at 5 p.m. today.
Rachelle Jackson went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs to lead JCHS (15-13), which scored eight times in the second inning to take control. Chelsea Tighe had a single, three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base, and Katlin Petro added a single, a double, two runs and an RBI.
Chaney, who had four hits and two RBIs, struck out three batters as she tossed the shutout for her sixth win of the season.
