PORTLAND — As has often been the case over the last two seasons, the Jay County girls cross country team cruised to an easy victory Wednesday. As has not often been the case, so did the boys.

The Patriot girls rolled at home to a victory over the Union City Indians and the Monroe Central Golden Bears, taking four of the top six positions for 24 points. Union City was second with 48 points, and Monroe Central was third with 59.

The boys grabbed four of the top seven spots for 27 points in their win. Monroe Central grabbed second with 41 points, and Union City was third with 73.

“(It was) a good meet today,” said Jay County coach Trent Paxson, whose teams finished second and third respectively in the Bellmont Invitational last week. “They ran stronger than what they had ran at Bellmont. That was good to see. They worked really hard last week going toward this meet.”

The defending sectional champion girls team was led as usual by junior two-time defending sectional champion Alyssa Johnson. Johnson led the entire race, cruising to the finish in 17-minutes, five seconds.

The Patriot boys team, which has struggled over the last several seasons and beat just one team at the Bellmont sectional last year, also had the top finisher in its race. Senior newcomer Mitchel Thomas finished seven seconds ahead of the trio of runners behind him to win in 19:44.

“Alyssa did a great job through the course,” said Paxson. “She knows the course and was out in front the whole way through.

“One thing that’s helping the boys is that we have the Thomas twins (Mitchel and Ian) who are running this year, and they’re running one and three and they’ve ran all summer. ... Essentially what they’ve done is pushed the team along to make them run stronger and that’s what’s helped out.”

Johnson was followed by her sister, Amanda, a freshman, for much of the race. Amanda Johnson stayed in second place most of the way before slipping to third as she finished six seconds behind Sara Lyons of Monroe Central in 17:19.

Another freshman, Amber Detro, was third for the Patriots. After Jill Threewits of Union City placed fourth in 18:00, Detro crossed the line fifth with a time of 18:07.

The freshman pair will be key for the Patriots, especially throughout the first half of the season. The team is currently without its No. 2 and 3 runners from last year, with Nicole VanSkyock lost to graduation and with sophomore Allison Fullenkamp still completing her recovery from an injury.

“Those are two that really are coming on strong, and that’s good to see,” said Paxson. “Our two freshman stepped right up in there. When you can do that — and they’re going to get stronger as the season progresses — that’s just exciting to see.”

Sophomore Jessica Mosier came in right behind Detro in 18:13, and senior Jill Roughia completed the team score with a time of 18:58.

Also running for the Patriots were Rose Weaver in 19:10 (10th), Lindsey Vesperry in 20:19 (15th), Andrea Collins in 21:44 (20th) and Kelly Whitenack in 22:13 (21st).

Two Monroe Central runners came in after Mitchel Thomas, but Jay County trampled the finish line after that. The Patriots grabbed four of the next six spots to secure the win.

Behind Bruce Tutterow and Seth Thomas of the Golden Bears came Corey Mock in fourth in 19:55. Monroe Central’s Brandon Morris placed fifth, but Ian Thomas and Travis Towell came in next in 20:08 and 20:10 respectively.

Union City got its top runner across in eighth place in 20:14, and freshman Edwin Clott completed the Jay County victory right behind him in 20:15.

“Corey Mock is right there at No. 2 and he’s running stronger,” said Paxson. “Our top three are just pushing the rest of the team. I think they’re going to surprise themselves throughout some more meets this year. They still have a long way to go, but they’re getting there.”

Also running for Jay County were Josh Atkinson in 20:26 (12th), Josh Selvey in 20:55 (13th), Doug Murray in 21:26 (15th), Josh Stults in 22:34 (19th) and Josh Shatto in 23:59 (22nd).

The Patriots will run in the Oak Hill Invitational Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
