Jay softball stumbles vs. Vikings (05/01/03)

Local Roundup

The Jay County softball team’s hitting problems emerged again Wednesday, and the defense wasn’t around either as the Patriots gave up 11 unearned runs to Huntington North in a 17-0 five-inning defeat.

Jay County (5-9, 2-4 Olympic Athletic Conference) gave up four runs in the first inning, seven in the second, one in the fourth and five more in the fifth with most of the damage coming on six errors.

Ashleigh Myers started and took the loss, allowing seven runs — four earned — on five hits in 11/3 innings. Ashley Cook didn’t have much better luck, giving up 10 runs — two earned — as she finished the contest.

The Patriots managed just two hits in the game, one each by Nikki Ingram and Felisha Parr.

Jay County will visit Fort Recovery Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Davis, Scots down JC

The prospect of facing Anderson Highland’s Ashlee Davis is never much fun.

The rest of the Scots didn’t exactly make the day any easier for the Jay County tennis team.

Davis — one of the top players in the country in her age group — defeated Daniela Harringer 6-0, 6-0 as Anderson Highland knocked off the Patriots 4-1 Wednesday.

Jay County’s lone win came from sophomore Whitney Schemenaur at No. 3 singles where she defeated Mandy Coplin 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Kelly Hess dropped the other singles match to Valerie Brock, 6-4, 6-1, after holding a 4-1 lead in the first set.

Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers fell 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to Erin Hostetler and Megan Stamper at No. 1 doubles, and at No. 2 doubles Brianne Morrical and Niki Guntle took a 6-4, 6-1 defeated to Mary Hampton and Whitney Williams.

The Jay County junior varsity tennis team also lost to Anderson Highland Wednesday, 3-2.

Jessica DeRome accounted for the lone singles win, topping Leanne Bryant 9-7. Brittany Pinkerton and Stephanie Homan teamed to beat Ilissa May and Marion Miller at No. 1 doubles 8-1.

In other singles matches Chelsea Reff fell to Kathryn Luksus 8-4, and Amanda Hicks lost to Lillian Washburn 8-5. At No. 2 doubles Angie Stults and Jenae Horn dropped an 8-2 decision to Luksus and Hampton.

The Patriots (3-6) will play at the Dekalb Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
