Jay, Spartans set for rematch (10/04/06)

JCHS/SAHS football

Fourth down usually represents the end. But Gary Cerqua and his Connersville Spartans and the Jay County Patriots will meet again.

The IHSAA held the draw for the state football tournament Tuesday night, and Jay County will visit Connersville in the opening round of Class 4A's Sectional 12.

South Adams ended up with the toughest possible road as it will visit Class 2A No. 5 Oak Hill, one of only two teams in Sectional 28 with a winning record, in the opening round.

All first-round tournament games will be Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.

Cerqua tried to lead his Spartans back against Jay County when they met in the deciding game of the Olympic Athletic Conference Sept. 22 after the host Patriots pushed out to a 21-7 lead. His touchdown run pulled Connersville to within 21-20 in the fourth quarter, but Jay County blocked the ensuing extra point. He led another drive late in the game, but the Patriots stopped running back Jamie Taylor on a fourth-and-3 try from the 11-yard line to hold on for the win.

Other first-round games in sectional 12 include Greenfield-Central (1-6) at Muncie Central (3-4), Muncie Southside (2-5) at Pendleton Heights (3-4) and Delta (5-2) at New Castle (4-3).

The Jay County/Connersville and Greenfield-Central/Muncie Central winners will play in semifinal action Friday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. The championship game will be Friday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m.

The Patriots have won eight straight against Connersville, with each of the last three victories coming by just one point. The Spartans' last win over JCHS, which has been eliminated in the sectional semifinal round in three of the last four seasons, came by a 26-0 score in the quarterfinal round of the 1999 sectional.

Jay County is 2-1 against sectional foes this year with wins of 35-27 over Southside and 21-20 over Connersville. It lost 42-14 to Delta in the season opener.

Other records among Sectional 12 foes are: defending champion Delta (4-0), New Castle (2-0), Pendleton Heights (1-1), Central (1-1), Southside (1-3), Connersville (0-2) and Greenfield-Central (0-3).

Joining South Adams and Oak Hill in Class 2A's Sectional 28 are: Winchester (4-3) at Alexandria (0-7), Madison-Grant (3-4) at Centerville (5-2) and defending champion Eastbrook (5-2) at Bluffton (2-5).

The South Adams/Oak Hill and Winchester/Alexandria winners will meet in the semifinal round Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m., with the championship game to follow Friday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m.

The Starfires' last meeting against Oak Hill came in a 42-14 loss in the first round of the 2003 sectional tournament. They have been knocked out in the opening round in four consecutive seasons.

Against other teams in the sectional tournament this year, South Adams has defeated Bluffton 22-14 and lost to Eastbrook 14-6. Oak Hill is 2-0 against sectional opponents followed by Eastbrook (2-1), Madison-Grant (1-1), South Adams (1-1), Bluffton (0-1) and Alexandria (0-2). Winchester and Centerville, who will play each other in the regular season finale Oct. 13, have yet to play a sectional opponent.[[In-content Ad]]
