Jay splits with Devils

A win in their final regular-season game sends the Patriots into tournament play with a winning record.
Jay County High School’s softball team dropped the opening game of a doubleheader 6-5 Saturday, but bounced back to win the second game 4-2 over the visiting Richmond Red Devils.
Nikka Chaney earn the victory for the Patriots (14-13), who open play in the Class 4A Sectional 6 tournament against Fort Wayne South Side at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Homestead. She limited Richmond to two runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out six.
Chelsea Tighe paced the offense in game two, going 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
Chaney hit a home run in the opener as she finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run.
Rachelle Jackson allowed six runs on 13 hits as she suffered loss in game one.

Baseball drops two
Jay County fell 10-8 to the Cowan Blackhawks and 5-2 to the New Haven Bulldogs Saturday as it hosted the Patriot Invitational.
The Patriots (11-15) scored three times in the seventh inning to pull even with Cowan, but gave up two runs in the eighth. They led 2-0 against New Haven before the Bulldogs scored five times in the final four innings.

Chance Fuller ripped a pair of doubles and scored once against Cowan, and Jordan McBride finished with two hits and two RBIs. Devin Conatser had a double and a run versus New Haven, and Keenan James went 2-for-3.
Dustin Selvey, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning of Friday’s win over Muncie Southside, suffered the loss in the consolation game.
Andy Haffner took the defeat in the opener.

JV baseball splits
CENTERVILLE — Wes Hibbard shut down the Centerville Bulldogs over the final six innings Saturday as the Patriots finished their season with a 5-3 victory. They lost 13-4 to Franklin County earlier in the day.
After allowing three first-inning runs, Hibbard pitched shutout ball the rest of the way against Centerville. He went the distance, striking out 10 batters.
Andrew McShane went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Brandon Muhlenkamp had a hit and a run.
Chaz Carroll took the loss against Franklin County. Nick Clemens had a pair of hits, and Tanner Reynolds and Zach Pryor each added a hit and a run.
