Jay sputters at Wapahani (04/15/04)
JCHS baseball
Heath Williams hitting home runs is a good thing. What has happened around him two of the three times he’s done it is not.
The senior shortstop had the lone hit — a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning — Wednesday as the Jay County baseball team lost 14-1 to the Wapahani Raiders.
Williams was the lone baserunner for the Patriots in the contest. He also accounted for the only run with a homer in the season-opening loss to Adams Central.
Starting pitcher Eric Van Matre was lights out for Wapahani, striking out six batters in four innings. He retired nine straight batters to start the game, and six more to finish it after Williams’ home run.
The Raiders took control of the contest quickly, scoring five times in the first inning. They added seven more runs in the second and went on to end the game in five innings.
Trent Bailey took the loss for the Patriots, allowing seven runs on seven hits in just one inning. He also walked two batters.
Jay County (2-2) will try to rediscover its offense Saturday when it hosts an Olympic Athletic Conference double-header against Connersville at 11 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
