WINCHESTER — The Patriot bats didn’t take long to heat up.
Jay County’s baseball team scored six times in its first at bat of the season, had 17 hits and clobbered the Winchester Golden Falcons 20-0 in five innings.
Sophomore clean-up hitter Michael Jobe led the onslaught, going 4-for-4 with four runs and a stolen base. Tony McCowan and Hughes each finished with three hits and three runs, and Josh Shatto had two hits and two runs.
Josh Ludy scored four times, and Josh Selvey added two runs and a stolen base.
Josh Atkinson got the victory, allowing just one hit while striking out three in the opening two innings. Josh Shatto followed with five strikeouts in two scoreless innings, and Michael Jobe struck out two batters in a scoreless fifth.
VanSkyock wins USGWA
INDIANAPOLIS — Keri VanSkyock has been outstanding in a pair of United States Girls Wrestling Association events this year.
VanSkyock opened at the USGWA state championships in Indianapolis in February. The Dunkirk resident and West Jay Middle School eighth grader was unopposed in the 152-pound middle school division, not that it would have mattered. She stepped up to the high school grouping and dominated.
In one of the preliminary rounds of the high school competition she scored an 11-0 major decision. Each of her other victories came on pins, including a win in 1-minute, 47 seconds over Morgan Pittsford of Yorktown in the championship match.
VanSkyock went on to compete in the USGWA National Championships in Michigan April 1 and 2 where she was unstoppable again. She won the 150-pound middle school championship by pinning Iowa’s April Ritts in 4:02.
Vormohr first in disc
MUNCIE — One Patriot victory was omitted from Wednesday’s story about the Jay County boys track team.
Patriot senior Joseph Vormohr finished first in the discus in the team’s meet against Muncie Southside and Blackford Tuesday. He won the event by more than five feet with a toss of 128 feet, 10 inches.[[In-content Ad]]
