Jay stumbles to 31-point loss (11/09/05)
JCHS girls basketball

The storm outside halted a stormy debut by the Patriots.
Jay County’s girls basketball team’s season opener Tuesday was typified by its first six possessions, all of which ended in turnovers. The home team still managed to trail just 19-16 despite coughing the ball up 10 times in the opening period, but scored just 10 points the rest of the way.
The game was called final with 4:42 remaining, giving Fort Wayne South Side a 57-26 victory, when the power went out at JCHS as thunderstorms passed through the county.
The lights had flickered minutes earlier, and the gym went dark as South Side’s Marceya Mingo tossed up a free throw for what would be the final point of the game. After a short wait to see if electricity would be restored, both coaches agreed to put the game in the books.
Jay County finished with more turnovers (35) — on pace for 41 if the game had been completed — than points.
“That’s the style we’re going to play all year long,” said South Side coach Andy Rang. “We’re going to get up and go and press you and try to force turnovers ... It helped getting a fast start like that.”
Rang’s Archers led by just three after eight minutes thanks to a Miranda Betz bucket at the first-quarter buzzer, but they were dominant the rest of the way. They scored the first seven points of the second period before Theresa Reinhart posted the Patriots’ only points of the quarter on an assist from Sara Garringer.
South Side (1-0) went on an 11-0 run in the final 5:34 of the opening half.
The final play before the intermission encapsulated the first 16 minutes as Sha’la Jackson didn’t even need to leave her feet to block a last-second shot by Whitney Homan. It was one of nine blocks by the Archers in their victory.
“... there was about a three-and-a-half minute stretch in the first half I thought we were aggressive. We played within the game plan ... Other than that in the first half I thought they dominated,” said JCHS coach Kirk Comer, whose team had 21 turnovers at halftime. “When you get out-rebounded like that and you turn the ball over as many times as we did you’re lucky you’re within 19 at halftime.”
Jay County actually out-rebounded the Archers by a wide margin (48-27), but only because South Side took so many more shots. Because of all the Patriot turnovers the visiting team had 70 field goal attempts compared to the home squad’s 40.
Markie Runyon scored the first point of the second half, but Jay County never made a serious run. The Archers pushed their lead to 25 points after three quarters, and the Patriots managed just a single point in the first 3:18 of the final period before the game was called.
Mingo led three South Side players in double figures as she finished with 15 points. She also had five rebounds.
Jackson scored 12 points in the first quarter en route to 14 for the game. She added a team-best seven rebounds, and Zaquanna Braden totaled 13 points.
“They executed their game plan perfect,” said Comer. “They got us in a running game, which we didn’t want to be in a running game with them ...
“We’re going to be a team that’s gradually going to get better. But by the end of the season I think you’re going to see a pretty good basketball team out there.”
Reinhart was the high scorer for Jay County with eight points on 4-of-8 shooting. The Patriots were just 10-of-40 (25 percent) from the field as a team, including 1-of-10 from 3-point range. They also struggled at the foul line, going 5-of-12 (42 percent).
Cassandra Huelskamp had five points, Chelsea DeBoy grabbed a game-best eight rebounds and Sara Garringer had a pair of assists.
Junior varsity
Jay County allowed just one second-half point, pushing a five-point halftime lead to a 35-9 victory over the Archers.
Natasha Stout was the only player in double figures, finishing with 10 points to lead the Patriots. Brittany O’Dell and Gina Muhlenkamp each finished with six points.
Sydney Weinert was the top scorer for South Side with four points.
Freshmen
Two points in the final period was enough for the Patriots as they held on for a 24-19 victory over South Side.
Mackenzie Loy led a balanced Jay County effort with seven points. Kristi Morningstar scored five points, and Chelsea Grady and April Roser each added four.
Heidi Orr powered the Archers with 12 points.[[In-content Ad]]
