Jay swim teams get past Hagerstown (01/14/03)

Local Roundup

Jay County’s boys and girls swim teams each found their way back into the win column Tuesday as they defeated the Hagerstown Tigers.

The boys team earned the win on the power of seven victories — including all three relays — by a final score of 95.5-82.5. The girls won just five of 12 events, but had plenty of second-, third- and fourth-place points in a 110-74 triumph.

Four different swimmers each picked up an individual win for the boys team, with two of them contributing to a pair of relay wins.

Daniel Fisher owned the 100-yard breaststroke, winning by more than 12 seconds with a time of 1-minute, 10.84 seconds. Adam Miller also picked up a big victory, taking the 100-yard butterfly by nearly five seconds in 1:05.56.

The pair also teamed with Dave Johnston and Matt Peterson to capture the win in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:56.02. They joined Joseph Vormohr and Derick Lee to finish the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:45.27 for another victory.

Peterson came away with another Jay County win as he took the 50-yard freestyle in 25.05. Johnston was first in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.15.

Vormohr, Scott Walker, Todd McCowan and Greg Current teamed to take the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:56.05.

Sophomore Lindsey Vesperry starred for the girls swim team for the second straight meet. She took her individual win in the 200-yard freestyle by more than 20 seconds with a time of 2:22.37.

Vesperry and Rachel McKee were the common links in the Patriots’ two relay wins as well. They joined Vanessa Wilkins and Stephanie Rines to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:33.62, and Julie Sours and Sarah Miller for the 200-yard freestyle relay victory in 1:56.35.

Sours led a one-two finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. She hit the wall ahead of teammate Tori Bradburn in 1:19.64.

Miller won the diving competition with 193.10 points.

Jay County will return home Tuesday to host Muncie Central at 6 p.m.

JC gymnasts lose 1st

Jay County’s gymnastics team, which was 17th in the most recent coaches’ poll voting, lost for the first time in a dual meet this season Tuesday. The Patriots dropped a 104.775-95.35 decision to the Fort Wayne Carroll Chargers.

Hannah Williams was the only Jay County competitor to place in the top three in any event, but she did take first place in both of them.

Williams won the floor exercise with a 9.05. Her other victory was in the balance beam, in which she scored an 8.75.

She added an 8.45 in the vault and an 8.3 on the uneven parallel bars — both fourth-place efforts — to take second in the all-around competition with 34.55 points.

Carroll’s Jessica Gebhard took the all-around with 34.925 points. Cassie Pyle grabbed both individual wins for the Chargers with an 8.9 vault score and a 9.5 on the bars.

Following Williams on the beam for Jay County were seniors Amanda Knight and Kayla Smith with scores of 7.9 and 7.8 respectively. Lacey Grider trailed her on the floor with an 8.05.

Lacey Thornburg was the No. 2 Patriot on the vault with a 7.75, and Brittany Bauman added a 6.8 on the bars.

Jay County scored a 77.85 in the junior varsity competition, in which Carroll did not field a full team.

Melissa Fifer had the lone victory for the Patriots, scoring a 7.7 on the vault. Heather Stevens scored a 24.35 for the top all-around score.

Jay County will travel to Connersville for a showdown with the Olympic Athletic Conference-rival Spartans Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
