Jay swimmers take fourth (02/11/05)

OSSIAN — The Jay County middle school boys swim team finished fourth Thursday as it competed at the eight-team Norwell Invitational.

Jay County went winless on the night, but got two top-three finishes apiece from Chance Milligan, Lance VanSkyock and Steven Kelly to finish with 171 points. The host Knights were first with 256 points, Indian Springs was second with 234 and South Adams took third with 226.

Milligan led Jay County as he finished second in both of his individual events. He was second to Justin Klopp of South Adams in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.78 seconds and also took second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1-minute, 4.61 seconds.

VanSkyock added a second-place effort in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing behind South Adams’ Alex Habegger in 1:21.93. He added a third-place finish in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:13.19.

Kelly placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:38.71 and sixth in the 400-yard freestyle in 5:47.41.

Milligan, VanSkyock and Kelly also teamed with Nathan Cain for third place in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:04.45. The same group was fifth in the 300-yard freestyle relay in 3:38.00.

Fort 7th ousted

Fort Recovery’s seventh grade boys basketball team got knocked out of the championship bracket of the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament Thursday with a 33-30 loss to the St. Henry Redskins.

The Indians will play in the MAC tournament consolation game Saturday at Celina at 12:30 p.m.

Josh Wendel paced the Tribe with 13 points. Greg Kahlig and Craig Tobe each added four points.

WJ grapplers edge AC

DUNKIRK — The West Jay wrestling team survived for a 22-21 win over the Adams Central Jets Thursday, improving its record to 3-1.

The Eagles got victories from Seth Drumm, Jerid Conatser, Sha White and Travis Garringer.

Winning junior varsity matches for West Jay were Alan Brown and Travis Garringer.

Tribe needs coach

Fort Recovery High School will accept applications for its head football coaching position until Feb. 28.
