JCHS cross country

CONVERSE - Four of Jay County's top five runners turned in their best times of the season, leading the girls cross country team to a second-place finish at the Oak Hill Invitational Tuesday. Freshman Tevan Nichols easily posted a career-best for the Patriot boys, but the squad still finished 12th out of 13 teams.

The Jay County girls team was the runner-up in a 10-team field, finishing five points behind Western (43). Blackford was a distant third with 99.

The Patriot boys scored 300 points, just five ahead of last-place White's. The host Golden Eagles won the boys competition with 52.

Junior Amanda Johnson led a string of season-best times for the girls team, which has put three runners in the top 10 in all three invitationals this year. She dropped six seconds to finished in fourth place with a time of 16-minutes, 43 seconds.

Oak Hill's Courtney Moses won in 16:10, followed by Western's Jenn Elliott (16:16) and Katie Hollingsworth (16:33).

Jessica Mosier made the biggest gain of any of the Patriots, edging Tipton's Ereica Stackhouse at the finish line of seventh place. The senior notched a time of 17:03, 34 seconds faster than either of Jay County's previous 4Ks this year.

Sophomore Kylie Wellman added another top-10 finish, placing 10th in 17:12.

Allison Fullenkamp, a senior, dropped 27 seconds off her best time of the year to place 17th in 17:39.

Freshman Kari Hemmelgarn continued her improvement as well, knocking off 26 seconds for a 21st-place effort in 18:04.

Nichols led the Patriot boys team for the first time this year, knocking another 28 seconds off his career-best. After needing more than 21 minutes in each of his first two varsity races, he came all the way down in 19:19 Tuesday to place 38th.

Brady Mills was second for Jay County as he placed 42nd in 19:34. Steven Kelly took 76th in 21:12, Ty Fullenkamp finished in 21:33 for 87th, and Branden Brinton was 96th with a time of 22:06.

Also running for the JCHS girls were Brittany Burris (32nd - 18:46), Cassia Laux (36th - 18:59), Jenna Valentine (40th - 19:12), Kristen Selvey (65th - 20:31) and Paige Klinger (81st - 21:43). Other JCHS boys runners were Josh Selvey (99th - 22:06), Adam Mescher (131st - 27:43) and Dylan Cook (133rd - 27:58).[[In-content Ad]]
