Jay tankers fifth at Norwell (12/10/07)

OSSIAN - Sam Miller picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in leading the Jay County High School boys swim team to fifth place Saturday at the Norwell Invitational.

The Patriots scored 145 points to finish tied for fifth with the host Knights at the 10-team event. Carroll won with 381, and Oak Hill was second at 150.5.

Justin Klopp set a pair of pool records as South Adams placed fourth, just 1.5 points ahead of Jay County and Norwell.

Klopp carried the Starfires with dominating performances in back-to-back events. He shattered the Norwell pool record in the 100-yard butterfly, winning by nearly five seconds in 52.92 seconds.

The previous record was 54.2.

The junior preceded that race with a time of 21.76 to clobber the field in the 50 freestyle. He broke the old pool record of 22.16.

Sam Trahin of Norwell also set two records on the day.

Alex Habegger added a third victory for South Adams in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1-minute, 4.23 seconds.

The second of Miller's two runner-up finishes for the Patriots came as he finished behind Klopp in the 100 butterfly in 57.4. He also finished as the runner-up in the 200 individual medley behind Trahin, posting a time of 2:06.05.

Aaron Hudson turned in a career-best time of 1:06.91 to finish second to Habegger in the 100 breaststroke, and Tom McCord was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle at 51.64.

McCord was also fifth with a time of 158.5 in the 200 freestyle, and the Patriots took second in the 200 freestyle relay and fourth in the 200 medley relay. Adding top-10 results for JCHS were: Hudson (sixth - 100 butterfly), Neal Fennig - sixth - 100 backstroke) and Lance VanSkyock (ninth - 100 breaststroke).

John Gresla turned in the only other top-five effort for South Adams, placing fifth in the 500 freestyle at 5:39.78. The team was third in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Others who cracked the top 10 were: Caleb Wurster (seventh - 100 breaststroke), Habegger (eighth - 100 butterfly), Gresla (eighth - 200 individual medley), Justin Sommer (10th - 50 freestyle) and Eric Feeney (10th - 5:59.81)[[In-content Ad]]
