Jay to play in Hall of Fame Classic

NEW CASTLE — Officials from the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday that Jay County High School is among the teams that have been selected to play in the 2012 City Securities Hall of Fame Classic.
The Patriots, who finished the 2011-12 season at 18-4, will play Cathedral (20-4) in the opening game of the event at New Castle Fieldhouse on Dec. 28 at 11 a.m.
Indianapolis Tech and Northrop will play in the second game at about 1 p.m.
The losing teams will play in a consolation game at 6 p.m., and the championship game will follow at about 8 p.m.
Hamilton Southeastern, Columbus North, Evansville Mater Dei and Logansport will play in the girls event, which will be Dec. 27.
Jay County last played in the boys Hall of Fame Classic in 1987, while the Patriot girls team participated in 2009.
Fort shut out
CELINA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s baseball team struggled to get any offense going Monday in an 8-0, season-opening loss to the Celina Bulldogs.
The Indians (0-1) managed just a couple of hits, singles by Chad Schroer and Jacob Muhlenkamp, while striking out six times. Shane Pottkotter and Blake Boughman each drew a walk.
Kent Retz suffered the loss, giving up six runs — five earned — on five hits and a walk. He struck out four batters in four innings.
Alex Thien gave up two runs in two innings of relief.
Tribe JV falls
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team gave up 10 hits Monday in a 14-4 loss to the Celina Bulldogs.
Cole Wendel started and took the loss for the Indians (0-1), allowing five runs — three earned — on three hits. He struck out seven batters.
Derek Backs led the FRHS offense with a single and two RBIs. Tony Keller and Michael Joash each had a hit and a run.
