BLUFFTON — After three consecutive losses, the Jay County girls tennis team got back in the win column Thursday night with a 3-2 victory over the Bluffton Tigers.
The Patriots, who had not won since the season-opener at Blackford, picked up the victory thanks to a pair of singles victories from former No. 1 doubles partners Erin St. Myers and Julie Sours. St. Myers gave up just two games in the No. 2 singles match for a 6-2, 6-0 win over Megan Harvey, and Sours did her one better at No. 3 singles as she topped Rebekah Yergler 6-0, 6-1.
Stephanie Homan and Carissa Wilkins, teaming for the first time as Jay County used a different lineup for the fifth straight match this year, earned the third win to seal the victory. They topped Jenny Bennett and Abby Meister at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-2.
The Patriots (2-3) were close in the other two matches as well, with each going three sets.
The No. 1 doubles team of Brianne Morrical and Chelsea Reff took the first set in a tiebreaker, but fell short in the other two in a 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-2 loss to Tess Crickard and Claire Peterson. Whitney Schemenaur pulled off a second-set victory in her No. 1 singles match against JoyAnn Hirschy, but lost by a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 count.
Jay County’s junior varsity team improved to 2-3 as well with its second straight victory, 3-1 over Bluffton. The squad won all three singles matches.
Freshman Megan Adams tossed a shutout at No. 3 singles, topping Krystal Green 8-0. At the No. 2 spot freshman Tiffani Bickel topped Jessica Meitzler 8-2, and at No. 1 singles Angie Stults knocked off Angie Smith 8-4.
In the lone doubles match Brittany Lewis and Katey Kohler fell to Allison Miller and Lauren Dunwiddie 8-2.[[In-content Ad]]
